Dear AT, I have frequently looked to you guys for help and now is no different: I am on a search for a chandelier for my bedroom, somewhere under $400. Any ideas? Thanks! Yelena

Our first thought is something on the softer side, maybe even ornamental to contrast with the minimal space. Shopping for a chandelier under $400 is tough so we'd suggest searching eBay, Craigslist, or local markets for vintage chandeliers that could be painted a high gloss white or black (or red!). Anyone have other suggestions or tips for this bedroom's lighting challenge?

I know you are looking for something in the $400 range but for an inspiration piece I'd look at the Knappa from Ikea. I would use a few in a cluster to create a unique chandelier or find something like it.

Lamps Plus is having a big sale - but if I had this room and $400 to spend, I wouldn't get a chandelier - you already have some great lighting...
...i'd go to Fabulousfurs.com and get a big faux-Chinchilla throw for that bed.

I would go with something really sparkly, like crystal chandelier. It would feel like a touch of luxury and indulgence in high-contrast with the rest of the austere, sleek furnishings.
somethign like this:

though this is $200 higher than your budget....

How about a dramatic drum lamp?

the room is all straight edges, modern. it screams for that old fashioned crystal chandelier - in black - not ordinary shiny crysal. who makes it? but i suspect it's more like $4k.
also, i would take that painting down a few inches.

I completely agree it should be something pretty to contrast the clean simplicity of the furniture. How about these:

I'd need to spend the $400 on a chic handrail to hoist myself out of that bed...

I am the the originator of the question...
I completely agree with the crystal elements idea, I am currently torn between something that contains a shade versus a more classic type chandelier. Any pro or against arguments?

Buy two large red lampshades and install them on your bedside lamps. Then, turn the two lamps upside down and hang them from the ceiling.

A friend of mine got some great chandeliers at Home Depot, of all places. There's one that sort of looks like milk glass thats gorgeous. I'm sure it was only about $200.

A side note....anyone know of Lighting stores going out of business in the boston area?
view yelena's profile
yelena, either choice is ok, depends on who you are.
crystal chandelier choice (esp in black): indicates a playful type, you don't feel like you have to follow all the rules, you're hip, appreciate different styles, but can bring it all together. (affordable - maybe get old pretty chandelier, spray paint it glossy black)
fabric shade: you like that staged look.ok, that's not fair. it's just a more conventional choice.

I don't have a suggestion, but may I inquire about your gorgeous platform bed? Great taste! Where did you purchase it? Thank you!
view mmbond's profile
:) The platform bed is from BoConcept....it was definitely a splurge on my part. To this day I sometimes feel guilty about not spending that money to feed a small country in Africa. Also, the BoConcept version comes with a frame that I removed because my mattress came up too high with it.
Ikea sells a similar version for much cheaper.

love the chandelier on the right side of the craigslist posting!
plus these are nice but a little above your price range but it may be worth it

yelena, I think a chandelier with a shade is too controlled. a freeform crystal chandelier without a shade is the break-out contrast needed, like the painting.

Thanks yelena! You love it; I definitely love it and it is something you use everyday - so... no guilt! :)

hey: great chandeliers has an amazing selection and they're grouped by price point (among other things; i find their site a bit of a maze). but i found a great one that was exactly what i was looking for - for under a hundred bucks! - that i'm eyeing for my entryway.

i think a crystal chandelier is the way to go as long as it's not too over the top

or something that has a shade yet is on the playful side

Here are some fixture that i purchased from wegotlites.com.
I too was doing some research online for an affordable chandelier company and came across these guys. I spoke to one of the experts named Josh Marshal who knew his stuff and was very helpful. Josh not only helped me get a fabulous crystal chandelier for my bedroo, he also helped me pick out chandeliers for my kitchen, entryway and walk-in closet.
Take a look at this website and if you do decide to go with them, call them up and ask for Josh Marshal. these guys rock!!!
below are some pictures of my chandeliers
