Good Questions: Finishing This Dresser?

07-02-GQ.jpgI bought this dresser on Craigs List, and I'm wondering how to finish it. The previous owner said it needs either a paint touch up or a new paint job, and I think I'd like to go for the latter. Our bedroom furniture is dark wood and our accent colors are mustard yellow (we're moving to a new house and are still discussing wall colors). Any tips? Thanks! Alex

I have a very, very similar one that I actually painted white to make it look like your picture above :)

I think I would stay with white -- I would just consider putting new pulls on it. Think of something in this shape, painted black:

I would paint the drawer fronts a pretty color I like (maybe mustard) and then I'd paint the frame a slightly darker version of the same color.
Then I'd change the pulls to something pretty that matches the new legs... maybe a dark wood finish to match your other furniture?

whatever color you choose, it's the hardware that will define the piece.

Why not wait until you move to the new house to decide what color you'd like to paint it?

However, the center drawers with the double knobs on each drawer is a non-original mistake. When you repaint, replace all the hardware: knobs on the outer drawers and coordinating drop-bail pulls for the center drawers.

It's a beautiful piece and deserves to get noticed in your room. This can be a real focal point in your room!

Paint: I would go for your accent color, mustard yellow, to brighten your room and bring a sense of cohesion to your other mustard items/pieces. Choose a paint that is glossy, which looks very modern like the piece itself...anything too flat will look old and much less exciting.

Regardless of what color you ultimately choose, I would paint the whole thing the same color including the cool legs. You could stick with white and just make it glossier.

Pulls: Agree that some new pulls would be a good idea. I would choose simple, metal pulls that look modern.

Good luck!

I like teeze's idea of 2-tone. And new pulls. And do a careful stripping and sanding job. The new smoothness is such a pleasure....

Hot, Indian pink would look amazing with mustard yellow and dark wood. Ooh, and brushed chrome drawer pulls. I believe in more than one accent color! This would look good in a bedroom with white walls and mustard accents. Throw in a few mirrors and some darkish bamboo shades...Yummy....

I'd wait til you moved to paint it.
But I also love the idea of this dresser in a cool yellow/orange mustard color.

I'd love to see it a gorgeous soft taupe, but definitely change those handles. Great lines!!!

How dark is the wood?
If it's ebony dark, why not go glossy red lacquer and leave the hardware alone? Or glossy black (very sophisticated).

Love this piece. You'll have lots of good choices.

I would paint the legs a different color (if you keep the piece white or light gray, then black). To bring attention to them. Great lines.
