Good Questions: Help Us Find This Chair!

07-10-GQ1.jpg

My wife and I found this great chair on the side of the road during bulk trash week in Austin. It has since become our favorite piece of outdoor furniture. It is nearing the end of it's natural life, and we would live to replace it, but we don't know even know what to call this style. Does anyone know if this is a type of chair that has a name, or if it is a one-off oddity?...

In case it is not clear from the photos, the chair is constructed from straight pieces of wood, strung together with thin cable. It folds almost completely flat for storage. If I can't find one for sale, I'll build one myself. It's just that comfy. Thanks, Travis

I have no idea what this chair is called or where it's from, but I HAVE seen them before, so I'm fairly certain it's not a one off.

On another note, refinish it! If the wood isn't rotted, it can be refinished. And if you find new ones, take care of those too! Wood that's constantly outside and exposed to the elements can last a very long time if you take care of it.

I've seen this chair too, and am looking to see if I can find any info. It does remind me of the wine barrel stave chairs (http://www.vivaterra.com/pls/enetrixp/!stmenu_template.main?complex_id_in=482007.484184.484184.907723.page). I'll keep looking though, now I want a few of these chairs! :)

Might also try 'folding Adirondack chair' these are pretty popular in the area I live too.

Well, aren't you folks just awesome! I am thrilled. Now I have purchase options and plans. I think I'll buy a couple to get me through this Summer, and the plans to keep me occupied in the Fall. Thanks so much!

we have them in every boutique, bistro and tourist center in the country (Honduras) available for cheap at around $35 each. dont know the name, because as with many ubiquitous items its too commonplace to bother naming.

I agree w/ Michpc -

Rather than replace it, simply powerwash it and use a wood sealer as you would with a wooden deck.

Taking care of the things we already have is far more cost-effective, "Green" and responsible than tossing/replacing when items show a little age...

Don't know if you guys are actually in the city, but if so, I've seen that chair sitting out front of this furniture store on Boylston Street called Pompanoosuc Mills. Check it out!

Funny, I had a mini-version of that as a child in my room. With all the mini-modern-chairs which could be lining my shelves, it would be funny to have that one. Guess if the full-size is ubiquitous in South America, I could find a touristy souvenir mini one too (should have looked harder when I was on a cruise in that part of the word a couple years back).

These are for sale at a farmer's market in my area every weekend. Made locally, and quite pretty...but not so easy to get in and out of if you're older.

i've known it to be called the mayan folding chain, where it is one of the center pieces in the rooms and poolside at the very cool Hotel Deseo in Palya Del Carmen.

We bought our Southern Cross chairs on Amazon, with free Supersaver shipping. They're about $175-200 each on Amazon, so not the $20-35 in other countries, but pretty easy to order online, and you get the authentic Southern Cross chairs. We have two of them, plus one of the Southern Cross club chairs, and they are awesome. My boyfriend is from Maine and his parents used to leave theirs out in all of the Maine seasons, and they lasted for years and years.

Yes, apparently they are all over Central America. I've heard from someone that gave one to my sister to borrow when she was pregnant, that in Costa Rica they are used as 'birthing chairs'.
