I live in a house with 5 other people. With ever-revolving roommates and so many tastes that have come and gone, it's hard to get everything to look cohesive — our living room is my next big project. It has a lot of space, tons of great light, and some not so terrible pieces of furniture and art. The entire room is this off white color, but the wall behind the blue slipcovered couch is a really neat faux stone. I feel like it would look great if i painted it so that it stood out, but I have no idea what color to paint it...

Instead of painting the faux stone - why not just paint the other walls?

Very cool, For some reason I am thinking it would look better if you didnt paint it to look like real stone but instead pick a bold color and just let it have that unique texture. I think if you tried to paint it too look like a real stone it would end up looking silly.

Sorry for being a bore, but I think I'd leave it as it is. I like it a lot, it has a nice sculptural quality. Different sources of light probably make interesting shadows on it. So it already does stand out, I think. Actually, less, and more concentrated light would probably enhance that wall. It probably looks really good at night, lit by just a few lamps or candles.

For some reason I am thinking a dark grey.

i definitely don't want to make it look in any way like real stone. i was thinking just a color. My boyfriend will be very happy with the opinions that it should not be painted at all.

Paint it this.
Light orangey-tan for the raised parts and a very dark tan or black for the cracks. The color would work with the blue couch.

i agree with bepsf.
when you decide what color scheme the room will be, paint the other walls and let the already neutral color of the 'stone' wall stand out from the new color.

I agree with leaving the wall and painting other walls
My current rental has stone-like walls in the hallways and I am reluctant to paint them because I would hate to mask their texture with paint. Sometimes you have to work around details instead of changing them

Paint the "grout" only a grayish white to make it look more like grout.

Don't paint the grout! It's the shadows that give it a visible texture. If you paint the grout a separate color it will look more like a two-dimensional painted design and less like a three-dimensional texture.
Keep it a light color to make the shadow lines the most visible.

Don't paint it! It looks great the way it is. I think that painting it would distract from the texture.

I would make it into a climbing wall :)
