Good Questions: Similar Queen Size Pottery Barn Bed?

12_12_GQ1.jpgHi AT! I found this bed at Pottery Barn and love the color, height, and finial details (being fresh out of college, the sale price doesn't hurt, either!). So of course the queen bed is out of stock. Now I'm looking for similar beds or someplace where I might find out of stock and discontinued items. Having no real experience with Pottery Barn furniture, is it worth hanging in until the spring line comes out or should I start beating the bushes for other poster beds that I could sand and paint? Thanks!

12_12_GQ2.jpgAnyone have a tip on out-of-stock / discontinued PB furniture? Or suggestions for similar four poster beds in queen size?

If you're willing to sand and paint, Salvation Army is a good source of bed frames. Seems silly to pay full retail for a DIY, no?

JcPenny has one similar, but in white. I would say try craigslist and consignment shops and paint it whatever color you want.

There is a company called Maine Cottage that makes beds very similar and you can get them in tons of colors if you aren't up for the DIY. Their website is www.mainecottage.com.

I'd go to a store like Gelco Woodcraft that sells unfinished furniture. They stock styles very similar to this and you can paint the bed any color you like. Plus, you'll save a ton of money.

Hmmm. If you can't live without it, you could always buy the king and have it cut down to queen size. I'd find the woodworker first though and get a quote before buying. Look for "furniture repair" in your area. It would likely wipe out your sale savings, but at least you'd have the bed.

I work at a Pottery Barn and I would suggest that before you give up on this one, you check with a local Pottery Barn store and see if they can get one for you. The catalog/website is a little different from Pottery Barn stores and often the distribution center for PB stores may have some in stock that they will more than happily ship to you or the store. It just may be worth checking into since stores and the website/catalog company carry different things in different quantities and can have different options. It may just be out, but the stores are always worth a shot. Hope you find it!

A nice bed from Craigslist or a used furniture store will cost far less than a Maine Cottage bed - or even a PB bed on sale.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over not getting something from PB that was on sale - just get your paintbrush, find something used and spend even less money.

Try the Mill Store - www.millstores.com/ which has multiple locations around New England. They sell unfinished wood furniture and you can either paint/stain it yourself or you can choose from their paint colors and pay extra for them to paint it. I have found the furniture to be made well, durable and the prices are very good!

Check out local antique stores, I have found a few similar beds for less then $200 then took them home and one I sanded & painted the other was already done! Also in some states there are Pottery Barn outlets, during the holidays items will be on sale - then on certain days say black friday weekend the whole store is 40% additional off! Cha ching!

I don't always think "find something used, sand and paint it" is a viable alternative for all people.
