A Saarinen oval with custom made Acrylic/Lucite base is my guess. Would be very easy to make (or have made).

It shouldn't be difficult to go to a local stone retailer and find a "remnant" piece of a stone slab that can be cut to the size and shape of table top you desire with the edge profile you like - then find a local metal fabricator who can weld a simple metal base for you in the size you like to support that tabletop.

I don't know what the oval cutting would add to the cost, but remnant granite (which actually includes big pieces) runs $7 a linear inch here in NH, at least at one dealer -- cut and polished for counters, including the hole for the sink. Probably not a lot more to have it made oval. This includes specialty granites normally selling for $250 a square foot.

i would totally also check craigslist out. i've been looking for a coffee table for ages (i think i've decided to just make one, since i can't find quite what i'm looking for), and there are a fair amount of marble topped oval ones on the site. there is one specific one i had in mind that seems to have sold, but there are these two as general ideas - not oval, but not terrible:

and know that a fabricator charged ME- wholesale-
$500.00 to waterjet cut & Polish a piece of Crema Marfil, thats 52" by 28"- straight polish edge.
AND- to fabricate an ellipse- no easy feat- even for the Man of Steel- and Weld- and polish legs,attached to it-
is a bit more involved than finding a local metal fabricator who can weld a simple metal base

Man_ofSteel, I guess it might vary depending on where you go, but I assure you that we recently bought what they called "remnant" granite to jazz up our bathrooms before selling our old house. The bigger piece was 5'. Larger ones were available. These were apparantly leftover from bigger kitchen jobs and the like, and were insufficient in quantity to do much more than a small counter or table.

Of course, the WEIGHT of a chunk of granite big enough for a tabletop (especially since the custom cuts are generally thicker than most tabletops I have seen) is not inconsiderable, so actually hauling it into a room could be a problem!

As for a welded base, I think the person who suggested that wasn't thinking of the sort of thing you'd build, all polished and everything. If it were just a rectangular frame with plain tubular legs, maybe welded iron painted black, with the oval overhanging the rectangle, it could be done relatively cheaply.

Me -- I'd try Craigslist!

Hi Leslie,

If you're still looking I have an oval white marble or granite coffee tabletop that is _very_ similar to the photo. I got it from my grandfather and lost the brass base while moving. I'd be happy to get rid of it; let me know if you want to see a photo. (I was surfing the web trying to find a replacement base for it, so I'm not familiar with this site-hopefully if you're interested I can post a photo.)
