Question Answered! Pink & Blue Bath Goes Geek

10_23_GQ1.jpg

Remember this awesome pink and blue bathroom from a Good Question last fall? Well, after sifting through 60+ comments, Anne-Lise took the advice of those who told her to just go with the flow and embrace the zaniness. Follow the jump to see her "think geek" solution...

Hi AT! I wanted to give you an update on my bathroom situation. I was going to go for one of the beautiful Marimekko shower curtains someone had recommended, or go all black and white. But I realized that there is absolutely nothing that could make this bathroom look respectable without renovating so I gave in to the flamingo/Elvis suggestions.

03_04_GQ2.jpg

I was a chemistry major in college, so it seemed appropriate to buy this periodic table shower curtain. I added pink towels, black bath mats, and my cotton balls, q-tips, brushes, and toothpaste are all stored in lab beakers and petri dishes. A graduated cylinder serves as a vase when I have fresh flowers around. Because the mirror is so low that I cannot see my head while standing at the sink, I purchased a chemistry lab-style stool where I sit as I get ready in the morning.

03_04_GQ3.jpg

I'm really happy with how everything turned out. I hardly notice that the bathroom is pink and blue anymore and I think the shower curtain actually pulls together all of the colors in this ridiculous space. My friends love the random orange windowsill, so I would never dare to paint it.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! Anne-Lise

oh i love it...especially since you took the 'theme' all the way with the accessories and the stool. Plus, it obviously adds personality.

Would you consider painting the cabinets to take the bathroom completely over with colour?

I remember the original post from last year. It created quite alot of good discussion. You created a really great space.

I wish, however, there was some way to deal "scientifically" with that white toilet cover. It just looks too stark against all the other colors, imho.

I usually detest theme rooms, especially bathrooms, but this one is too unique not to love. Awesome job!

You're a lot braver than I am!

I have a pink and black 50s bathroom and until I can renovate it, my strategy to down-play the pink was to paint the walls above the tiles white, I put up a white quilt-like shower curtain, I only buy white and grey towels (white for body and grey for hands and face) and nickel-finish accessories. I thought I had succeeded in making my bathroom a bit calmer, but now I realize it just looks boring!

I like that you were able to have fun with your bathroom making it wild and geek-chic!

I love it. Every house should have one room that is slightly crazy, would be great to have one zany room in an otherwise monochrome house. I'm off to buy some pink paint!

sorry for being such a stick in the mud, but I don't get this. all that appears to have been done here is she put up a new shower curtain, put out some colourful towels, and put her qtips, etc. in jars. So... what's the big deal here. The cabinet above the sink appears to be the same colour, and the windowsill was not painted. not getting this one at all....

cathie - I have to agree. The old paint wasn't even scraped off the window and it looks like the old, ugly shade is still there. Unless that's part of the look? I don't get it.

why not just reglaze the tiles? inexpensive and would waaaaaaaaaaay tone down the offensiveness on the eyes.... also agree with the comment on the toilet seat-- blue would be an improvement... the shower curtain is quirky - i get that- but the neon pink towels clash with the unpleasant rosey colored tiles that are everywhere...

Sometimes it's just easier to embrace what you have and have some fun with it, rather than making drastic changes (especially if you rent and may not be allowed to make any changes anyway). The fixtures and tile seem to be in pretty good shape for their age.

I think I would have asked if I could touch up the paint on the window frame (including painting the ledge white), and I would have gone with blue and/or black towels instead of hot pink, but it's a cute bathroom, and I bet it wakes you up in the morning!

Sometimes a great solution just requires clever use of color.
This bathroom is amusing & has personality. Well done.

adding one to the pile - it's awesome. I would totally rock the periodic table shower curtain if my bathroom didn't come with a mediterranean tile theme.

the theme seems a little thin...maybe it works when you can actually see the stool and beekers

I love it! a black and white color scheme would have been fine, but it would have screamed 'I'm trying to ignore the tackiness!' now you own it and it shows you have a great sense of humor.

Am I missing something... she hung up a shower curtain, right?

I think this is a fun solution for a renter. She got something she can live with without knocking herself out with a lot of effort-consuming renovations, and pulled together a theme. It is wacky. I'm not into chemistry, but it seems like the right colorful and fun shower curtain can help you focus on some of the other details without breaking out the demolition equipment or counting down the days until you can move. What a way to accept the things you can't change (or don't care to take on).

For the people who still think you should reglaze the tiles or aren't impressed with all of a new shower curtain and a few countertop accessories, just phooey on them. This isn't shy or tame, it isn't picture perfect, but it has a personality, and yes, good for going a few extra steps to draw out the theme, and for sharing pictures of the update. I think it's funny how your friends love the orange window sill, and I agree, I don't think the space would have quite as much spirit going for it without this strange and quirky little piece of color.

Kooky and fabulous! My last apartment had a horrible pink bathroom, and of course I couldn't change it.

So I went silly and put blue and yellow rubber ducky stuff everywhere. I wanted a rubber ducky bathroom when I was a little kid, but of course we only had one bathroom in our house so Mom would never give it over to us kids to wreak havoc on.

And I figured, hey, it's a rental, accessories are cheap. It was definitely fun! And a bit of a conversation piece.

I LOVE that shower curtain. Lather, rinse, repeat... ooh, argon! (I once saw a bottle of vinegar and went, "Ooh, ethanoic acid!", so I definitely have those chem nerd credentials! Plus, when I was sick last night, I used my molymod kit to make a molecular model of the ibuprofen molecule.) Science theme = ROCK ON :D

Wow, we just bought a house that's the same colors! I can't believe someone else has that! The pink I could deal with, but I don't think I could use a blue toilet or tub. It weirds me out!
