Source for Super Small Electronic Fire Insert?
Good Questions

07-31-GQ.jpgQ: I just bought a row house in the South End. There's a fireplace in the dining room that's got a nice surround, but isn't functional and the chimney isn't fireworthy. I was thinking of putting one of those electric inserts in, but the actual space is TINY, like a foot wide, and seven inches deep. I think it's actually a little coal basket, given the age of the house. Is there anyone that sells REALLY small scale electric inserts?

Editor: Most folks in Boston are accustomed to non-functioning fireplaces but this tiny thing has us stumped! Anyone have experience searching for unusually sized electric fire inserts? You could always go the candle route in the meantime...

When I was moving into my place I ended up using my non-functioning fireplace as a temporary drinks cabinet (people kept giving me housewarming bottles of wine etc) and it's just kind of stayed that way. I've gotten used to it now and lots of people think it's deliberate and compliment me on it. Doesn't keep you warm though - well, not unless you use one of the bottles and make hot whiskies ;)

What about Sunjel or another brand of gel? http://thesunjelcompany.com/SunJel_Fireplaces.html I bought a fake fireplace that I could burn gel in and your real fireplace is more than sufficient. It's neat stuff and even crackles like a real fire.
