Haunted Houses: An H.P. Lovecraft Walking Tour

Fleur-de-Lys_Studios.jpg

A few days ago we wrote about a gorgeous contemporary home on Providence’s College Hill, but the neighborhood is also where some of the city’s most interesting historic buildings can be found, including many that served as settings for noted 20th century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft’s stories.

Lovecraft was born and raised on College Hill where he spent most of his life until he died in 1937, and much of the area’s architecture found its way into his chilling fiction. The Arts and Crafts Fleur-de-Lys Artist Studios (pictured above) — by far one of the city’s most intriguing (and creepiest) buildings — was described by Lovecraft in his well-known story, “The Call of Cthulhu.”

Visit hplovecraft.com to follow a comprehensive walking tour of the neighborhood which includes Lovecraft's residences, haunts and memorials and is sure to inspire horror and architecture fans alike. Included in the tour is the Providence Athenaeum, a historic library (with a fantastic interior) that was visited by Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe and includes rare works by both writers.

Have you been to Swan Point Cemetery where he's buried? It is the most beautiful place! Oh, and there was an apartment for rent recently in a home he once occupied. I would have moved in in a heartbeat if I could have!

Wow, I spent a summer in high school taking classes at RISD, and this photo has given me some vivid flashbacks, specifically walking up one of those steep streets and listening to a local recount the numerous ghost stories from the area.

His grave in Swan Point is pretty cool, it says "I Am Providence".
