These days its hard to say that anything good can come from our dependence on gasoline. But we ran across this survey of modern gas stations and it made us stop and think — why couldn't beauty and small-space inspiration be found in a gas station? Most of these structures were built during a time when the complex environmental and political issues that surround gasoline today were not at the forefront of people's minds. Regardless of politics, it's an enlightening collection and you can read more about each building and vote for your favorite Modernist design here.

Love these. I also love the old stations from the 20s through 40s that you sometimes still see (if you're in the Boston area, there are no longer gas station examples in Somerville that I've seen: Hertz on Somerville Ave, and the now-closed Enterprise in Davis Square). I wish that much thought was put into newer gas stations...every little bit of architectural stimulation in our environment makes things more enjoyable...
