Marcel Breuer at the RISD Museum
Rhode Island

(Welcome Sarah — our newest New England blogger posting from Providence, Rhode Island!)

Marcel Breuer: Design and Architecture at the RISD Museum of Art (through July 19) presents a large collection of Breuer’s drool-inducing furniture designs alongside a survey of his architectural works — some of which, like Breuer's own home in New Canaan, Connecticut (image 3), were built right here in New England while Breuer was a professor at Harvard along with his Bauhaus colleague, Walter Gropius.

Breuer was only 23-years-old when he developed his iconic tubular steel furniture and went on to become one of the most influential designers and architects of the 20th century. The retrospective shows the vast scope of Breuer’s design genius and, um, we really can’t help imagining how excellent any one of these pieces would look in our own home.

The RISD Muesum is located at 224 Benefit St, Providence, RI 02903.

Locally there are a few iconic Breuer buildings. The Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Pirelli Building in New Haven CT on the side of Ikea and the Breuer House I in Lincoln, MA.
