Hot or Not? Rustic Wood Furniture
Boston

woodchair.jpg

We were in Texas for a wedding last month and made a stop (per a certain nephew's request) at the Bass Pro Shop to check out the speed boats. While there, we discovered that they had a home furnishing section which is where we found this little chair...

Survey after the jump.

The Bass Pro Shop's furniture line was mostly comprised of completely camouflaged Lay-Z-Boy sets, but in the midst of that we found this rustic wooden chair. Maybe not for everyday living, but we could see it in a cabin. And it was comfy...

What do you think?

I love rustic wood pieces, but I feel like that chair wants to give me the finger...

Of course it's "Not"!
How could you even ask?
Wow, that's an ugly chair!

Extremely NOT hot. But that just has to be a rhetorical question.

I'm allergic to rustic things since the late 1980s.... it makes me have nightmares about being forced to live in a Davy Crocket theme park full of well-thinking boy scouts..

Oh c'mon, it'd be cute in the right setting, like a little boys room

An otherwise slick modern room can benefit from something rustic and rough-hewn.

Your example, however, is an unfortunate specimen that only feeds people's prejudices. How about a groovy driftwood lamp, with a white drum shade? A side table composed of gnarled tree roots and a glass top? A George Nakishima chair?

this really is particularly awful :-D i am not a fan of that kind of stuff, it always looks contrived imo. (it also looks horribly uncomfortable.)

I love a touch of rustic in a room. At first glance, I was all "oooh," but then I looked agin... someone with no design capabilities was trying way to hard to make this look like something goldilocks would have found in the three bears' cabin. This piece is just bad. I especially find the ass-shaped seat a turn off. It would make a great "time out" chair for some unfortunate child.
If you haven't considered rustic furniture before, I can understand that may be wondering if this is a good example... I agree with shirley-temple-of-doom: if you are interested, look around! There are many beautiful, well designed examples out there! Thanks for sharing this piece. Perhaps it would make a great "time out" chair for some unfortunate child (just kidding).

Rustic is OK, sometimes, in small doses. BUT (no pun intended) that chair is a mess. The top looks like a hitchhikers thumb and the seat butt-imprint looks awfully uncomfortable (unless yours was the butt impression taken for the carving, I guess).

They have 5 of these chairs on wythe avenue in Williamsburg, (think its called two jakes or something). The ones in the store are without the crazy back, just a plain back. They look good in the store. The owner invited me to sit in one, so i did, wow, it was very comfortable, most comfortable wood chair i've ever sat in.

One potential drawback is the considerable weight, these are not chairs that you want to move around much like sliding under the kitchen table to make room and then slide them out to sit in, too heavy for that. Also, in these stores, lots of nice stuff, but nothing is cheap.

looks like here in aspen where everyone has to have an 'aspen-looking' type house, furniture, decor....*yawn* so over it. the best part is that they are also the ones that wear fur & cowboy hats to e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

Rustic is bad enough, yet when it is lacking in whimsy, proportions, charm or even humor, it is simply grotesque. Bad taste is a terrible thing and that someone could come up with a nightmare like that is sad, very sad indeed. Oh, by the way, it looks horribly uncomfortable.

Rustic wood furniture can look good in the right context. I do think this one looks a little uncomfortable since it looks like it's more of a wedgie injector than a seat. =)

Thanks for posting this here. Interesting conversation...
