Name: Joshua, Amanda, Julian + Chloe (cat)
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Size: 1950 square feet, foursquare single family home, built 1914
Years lived in: Owned 6 months; Moved from Brooklyn, New York
After 7 great but grueling years in New York, this little family of three decided to pack things up and make a fresh start in a more laid back locale. We covered their efficient 3-month makeover back in February and now, with another 3 months logged, we’re thrilled to show you more of their lovely space as they continue to settle in and make their new, old house a home...

Our initial impression of the Deaners' makeover was one of awe considering how much they were able to accomplish with so little and in such a short time! Most of their improvements have been simple paint, wallpaper and material upgrades — no major demo involved. We love seeing folks content to live lightly in older homes, using what exists whenever possible and taking their time to live in and understand the space. We've found that in these situations, the home and homeowners develop a natural dialogue that ultimately creates a true, unique aesthetic.
We love color but something about the single wall paint used throughout the house, in conjunction with the old wood floors, creates a wonderfully cohesive space, perfect for showcasing this couple's amazing art collection and eclectic taste in furniture. Really lovely job, guys!

Really beautiful. Would you mind sharing stairway wall color and your source for the black and white duvet? Love them both - thanks!

It's a very nice makeover - I'm particularly impressed with the master bathroom, the workmanship in the painting/wallpapering, the refinished floors, the choice of exterior colors and the attic/office with it's beautifully painted floor.
Suggestion - Move the daybed, rug and white credenza from the livingroom upstairs into the office and get a couple of nice vintage armchairs, a huge rug, some endtables and lamps for the living room - and move the credenza from the entry into the living room.

I love this house-inside and out. I'm especially happy to see the hollywood light fixture in the bathroom. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has one.

Oh my god. This is seriously the absolute BEST house tour I have seen on AT. Ever. Your home is endlessly inspiring and the palate is so so good.
Can I ask where you got Julian's crib? It's perfect...I have never seen a crib that I like until now. (I'm super picky with them! and I'm not even pregnant...)

There really are some beautiful homes in Providence, and even a lot that haven't been updated in decades and ready for a little refurbishing. And the city itself is beautiful, with great schools... But the economy is very tough there- the 2nd highest unemployment in the country!

Love love love it. I so appreciate seeing individual style rather than another Domino/DWR replica. Great job! Would you mind sharing your source for the credenza by the staircase? THanks!

Hey, I'm back again since I loved your space so much!
I have a random question- how do you live with so little and keep yourselves from going overboard? My problem would be that I would see neat things at flea markets, etc and want to bring them home with me, and eventually I would no longer have a minimally decorated space (boo). I suppose it helps to have a consistent palate throughout the house, because that eliminates a lot of potential fuss right there, but I was just wondering if you found it to be a struggle at all. I know it's a pretty new space so you probably haven't really had to deal with that much yet...

Wow.. thank you for all the feedback and I am happy everyone seems to like our home. Please find the answers to some of the above questions:
TAmom:
iced cube silver was used in every room (except for the LR which was white.)
Amazingly due to shadows and light the same color paint looks different in different rooms.
Erin Lang Norris / Yellow Canoe:
the SPARROW CRIB is from Genius Jones http://www.geniusjones.com
Susana:
The credenza is vintage from RePOP http://www.repopny.com
aperdollsforboys:
the attic walls are iced cubes silver and the floors are an oil based paint used for porches.
Carrefour_ny:
The shades are from Blind King in Providence.
Erin Lang Norris / Yellow Canoe:
Yes – I do think twice before buying stuff at flea markets and ask myself “do I really need this?” Later on I usually regret not purchasing - hahaaa. Truth be told I have a lot of “stuff” in my basement which I haven’t figured out how to incorporate yet.

Holy cow! This home is gorgeous! The floors are gorgeous and I love the bedding in the guest room. The dining room has to be my favorite room though...it looks so lovely.
view suzy8track's profile
I agree with everyone about your gorgeous home. I love the house itself....the exterior and the woodwork and floors (wow...the dining room floor!) throughout. I like that you left the wood unpainted on the stairway, while the other moldings were painted white. It really makes the stairway stand out as it's beautiful on its own. I like the artwork, varied pieces that are interesting. I'm like Erin Lang Norris/Yellow Canoe....I would have a really hard time restraining myself from adding more pieces. You have a lot of discipline! Very well done.

Beautiful - I really love the idea of using one paint color white throughout the home.
And, this is a good example of how wooden stairs can look stellar with white trim (re: one of yesterday's Good Questions).

Hey Amanda, how are you finding life in Providence after NYC? The city has really cleaned itself up in the last dozen years and the local arts have definitely evolved and being close to some nice beaches in the summer is fun, but sometimes it can feel a little too local...

Wondering which shade of the woods wallpaper that is. I have been looking for one with a grey background, and haven;t been able to find one - only one called "grey mauve" which looks more in the purple/pink family. Your photo, though, looks truly grey...help?

This is so funky and stylish -- just like Providence. I always had the fantasy of chucking New York for Rhode Island (though I ended up a bit farther north). Rhode Island is gorgeous and fun, and so is your home.
On a side note, when you say your house is 1950 square feet, you mean PER FLOOR, right?

First impression is WOW. You have managed to add interesting modern furniture that lets the great bones of the house shine through. By keeping everything simple and not filling up every corner, it is a NYC apartment dweller's dream (I'm sure my entire apartment fits into your living room). As a gardening nut (from former home owning days), I'd love to see you add more flowering plants out front -- I particularly love hydrangea (now in bloom), rhododendron, lilacs -- all old standbys -- you could get them all in purples and/or whites if you're trying to keep your color palate simple. I'm also a sucker for irises, tiger liies (any lilies)... honeysuckle, anyone? Enjoy your wonderful home.
