89 Year Old Woman Shares Her Seaside Cottage with AT!

IMG_5764.jpg

new_housetour08.jpg

This house tour is definitely a departure from the modern, hipster, or minimalist homes we often see on Apartment Therapy. We happened upon this irresistible Gloucester, MA cottage yesterday while visiting a new client of our design business. We rarely experience we'd-trade-homes-with-you-in-a-heartbeat envy but let's just say we awoke this morning daydreaming about this cottage. Peek inside at this quintessentially New England seaside home that blends amazing sunlight, spirit-easing vistas, and an eclectic, unintentionally hip, lived-in style built over 89 years of life...

As memories of summer start to fade, consider this tour a last hurrah, as you browse through the sun-drenched rooms and the porch that has hosted countless family gatherings, overlooking the water. Our homeowner (who prefers to remain nameless) was generous enough to share her home with AT readers, a younger generation. We present this cottage not for reader critiques on amount of stuff, style, etc. but to offer you a rare glimpse into a seaside home inhabited by an inspiring woman and her lifetime of objects, photographs, and mementos. Not to mention her original Design Research sofa, Marimekko pillows, Rolling Stone Magazine bin, and refreshingly unpredictable arrangement of objects...

The homeowner, who lives here year-round, said that residents of this incredible neighborhood never stop appreciating its magic. And it's apparent that she feels the same about her particular home. When asked about her favorite sources she mentioned a love of thrifting (a woman after our own hearts), with a particular nod to a secondhand shop ironically named "The Stock Exchange" located in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Besides the obvious elements of abundant natural light and amazing views, we were enamored with the low ceilings with exposed beams, slanted rooflines upstairs, incredible number of windows, and our host's fabulous sense of arrangement that would make the editors of Domino Magazine coo. There was nothing predictable about how she placed her decorations, from the way she hung things on the walls in unusual clusters to the string of glass ornaments that lined the fireplace mantel. And everywhere we looked there were surprising touches - the maps used as wallpaper in the upstairs office, the tinkertoy sculpture hanging in the kitchen, the recipe permanently scribed on a kitchen cabinet. This is the kind of place where we wanted to spend days soaking up the lifetime of collected objects and memories.

This is perhaps one of the most accidentally hip homes we've ever been in, made all the more delightful by the fact that the owner has been relishing life for 89 years. She doesn't have an email address so we'll be calling her when her house tour goes up to guide her through the process of checking out the tour! Our visit ended with an invitation to return for lobster rolls and a visit to the beach. We'll be taking her up on that...

Thank you so much for sharing your home.

What a sweet, cosy, timeless house.
Not made all in a week by a designer, but slowly, over the years. That feel is nearly impossible to imitate :-)

really lovely and personality-filled. Mobiles aren't my thing, but I love the aged map wallpaper in the office. And i would kill for that porch and that view!

Judging from the things in her house, she seems like a fun lady.

Although, even if she's nameless, does she really want you to be revealing her age? ;)

Kyle the blogger here...

Yes, I can't wait to share your comments with the homeowner!

Mrs. Mack, yes I was given explicit permission to state the homeowner's age - she understood that it made this tour all the more interesting.

And you're right that she is a very "fun lady"!

Thanks,
Kyle

If I could curl up on that bed and take a nap with that sunlight streaming in, the waves breaking through the open window, I think I could die happy. What a gem!

I love this house - down to the Goose on the kitchen counter and the crazy broom. This is a real house and does not feel "curated". Thanks for sharing your style!

Lovely! I would be so interested to know how to live that long and still keep the house so nice and clear... what's her decluttering philosophy, I wonder?
Thank you!

I would agree that this is a wonderful, lovely, livable house, but I do take exception to the idea that the "hip" look is accidental or unintentional. I think this woman knows just what she is doing, and to imply otherwise is somewhat ageist.

From someone who chronologically could be this woman's daughter and your "typical" reader's mom, whose own house is intentionally hip.

Dear Mrs. Yow,

Perhaps calling the look accidentally or unintentionally hip was a bit of a misnomer, albeit not ageist.

It's that after hanging out with this homeowner for a couple hours, it would be safe to say that while she has her own style, she doesn't follow specific trends or style, creating instead a very unforced, incredible style that also seems to be somewhat hip. I usually think of "hip" as trying to be "hip". This woman has an effortless style.

Thanks,
Kyle

sarahisaghost - I thought its' was pretty creative too--I definitely had to stop and ponder that one. Granted, its and it's is pretty confusing to many, but this is a first.

Kyle, I figured that we were dealing with semantics. Hip is one of those words with meanings that range so far afield that some are nearly opposites. But as a rapidly aging woman it does chafe that older folks are so routinely underestimated. Although I do like when someones assumptions about me get a case of whiplash (plump and white-haired avant-garde electric guitarist)

A beautiful home -- authentic 'grandma style' without the silly ironic flourishes or hipster trendspotting that call out 'trying too hard.' The recipe is simple: take one (or more) person with a taste for interesting things, add to attractive living space, let bake 40-50 years.

NB: no plates on the wall!

I love this house! How fantastic would it be to hang out with a cup of tea and a book in one of those wing chairs overlooking the water?

Just goes to show that collecting and keeping only what you love makes for a very interesting and cozy home.

Each and every chair in this house screams comfort. Can just imagine sitting on it and going 'ahhhh'. Real fun. So many things are displayed, reminds me of my parents' house. Full of stuff, but still not cluttered. And yes, what could be better than sunlight on a white sofa!

I wish the owner of this home lived near by, because we would be simpatico. Her home reveals character, a good eye, memories, love of light and water, and an innovative spirit.

As for revealing her age, why not?

I'm 79, have organized clutter in my Greenwich Village apartment, where everything tells a story about worldwide travels, an international family ( I do have plates which I purchased all over the world on the walls in my galley kitchen), family photos, patterns, sculpture, paintings, and though I love blue as this lady does, I really include many colors. She and I are free of rules and obligations to follow trends; our homes developed through the years and reflect our visual appreciation of the world and handmade objects, and who we are and once were.

As an orphan from the Atlantic Coast (who is in an aspect of the music industry: see magazine holder), I almost feel like a burden has been lifted and in some sense... not only do I feel a sharp yet wonderful poignancy - I feel as if the mother of us all has been discovered. What a blessing and timely reminder that there is nothing new under the sun, just humanity- of all stripes- going on as we do (Yes, that was for the ageists). The very best to the lovely home owner. The very best. Thank you.

Oh, my! I believe Mrs. Mack was "hip" before "hip" was cool.

Her chronological age is irrelevant: Mrs. Mack is one of those souls who is forever young -- and this evident in her home, with its sense of playfulness, whimsy and curiosity about the world around her.

What an inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
