Hannah Barrett
and Laurel Sparks' townhouse condo had no chance but to be a smashing success of a space. Here are the ingredients to their fabulous recipe: 1) One super talented, creative couple, Laurel and Hannah, both respected artists; 2) An equally talented architect / designer sister and brother-in-law duo who live in the upstairs condo; 3) One gut renovation of an 1859 single family townhouse into two 2-floor condos. The result is an amazing, refreshing space that lingers in your mind for a long time to come...

The story of Hannah, Laurel, Hannah's sister Anne and Anne's husband Todd's adventure of buying, renovating and converting a single family home into two fantastic condos was profiled in the February 24, 2008 edition of the Boston Globe Magazine so we'll send you over there for more of the details.

We were delighted to have a chance to see the space for ourselves. Here are the elements that most captured our hearts: The spotlighting of amazing architectural details including beautiful crown molding and an original fireplace; the unexpected and rhythmic combination of sophisticated and saturated colors on their walls, furniture, and decor; the dining room table designed by Hannah's sister Anne that illuminates with a pull of a tassle; the twinkly combination of recessed lights and unique pendant lamps; the incredible backyard; and the art, oh the art.

(Stay tuned for a future house tour of Anne and Todd's condo...)

The more I look at this the more I love it. It's full of what I think of as visual rhymes and puns. Stunning!

When I saw gut reno I was scared, but this actually is a really nice job of keeping the old and making it modern. So nicely done.
