Jeff's Safe Harbor With a View
House Call

(We're trying out some of the best applicants from our New York Blogger Search — this House Call comes from applicant Johnny Williams. This house is in Maine, so we're posting it on the Boston site!)

Name: Jeff
Location: Rockport, Maine

Nestled on a hill overlooking Rockport Harbor, Jeff’s home is a bold modern take on coastal design. Constructed three years ago, it was nicknamed “A Point of View” in response to some of his less-than-receptive neighbors. Love it or hate it, you have to admire the attention to detail — the lavish mahogany floors and cabinetry, white marble counters and vaulted ceilings...

How would you describe your home’s style?
A modern craftsman with a nautical influence.

What’s your favorite room and why?
The upstairs TV room because of the views and the coziness.

What’s your favorite piece of furniture?
The custom made dining table and chairs.

What was the biggest challenge in decorating your home?
Keeping it simple.

What’s your proudest DIY moment?
Installing my own wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom.

Biggest splurge?
Marble work for the kitchen.

Best bargain?
Mexican slate for the kitchen back splash.

What’s the nicest time of day to be at home?
Early in the morning when its quiet and peaceful.

Stunning views. Expensive home. Ultimately, a bit generic.

Something about the description rubbed me the wrong way. I am curious about the neighbors' complaints.

Hey I am from Portland!
Anyway, coastal neighbors can sometimes be unreceptive to new houses being built...is it a Maine thing?

I love Maine but dont think I would enjoy seeing the outside of the house there.

It's a fascinating house, but the text doesn't match the images. No wallpapered bathroom, no shot of the "lavish mahogany floors", and only a distant glimpse of the Mexican slate backsplash. Either we need more pictures, or the scale of the post should be drawn in to present a single aspect of the house in greater detail (such as the relationship with the neighbours, custom built furniture, or working with long narrow spaces).

I'm wishing for more writing and more pictures- this seems too brief to judge, but there's some potential here!!

As for the house, my goodness, that's an imposing block of cabinetry in the kitchen... and by "imposing" I mean "a top-heavy monstrosity." Eek.

even though this piece is short it's the best-written one so far among the new york tryouts.

Of the applicants so far, this one stands out for the quality of the photos and I can't find fault with the text.
