We work with a lot of people who live in small spaces and need to take advantage of vertical wall space, above existing furniture, for extra storage. The typical solution includes all kinds of wall mounted shelves. Fortunately, for those of you who don't like seeing all your stuff on open shelving, we've noticed a trend towards good looking wall mounted cabinets (outside the kitchen!) that hide your goodies AND look good...
We took special notice of these Hyde Wall Mounted Cabinets from CB2, available in green and white. Even for me, the intensity of the green borders-on-noxious but if you're ready for bold, they'd be a fun fit. The white might be a more versatile design solution. We like the dimensions of the cabinets: 30"Wx12"Dx14"H. However, these stow-your-stuff cabinets, which can be hung vertically or horizontally, don't come cheap — they're $200 each.
We'd love to hear how you've used wall mounted cabinets in rooms other than the kitchen. Maybe you've used actual kitchen cabinets in other rooms?
I have always thought this type of garage-door opened cabinets are a much better solution for kitchens. The doors can be open and not in anyone's way. You can keep them open the entire time you are cooking or putting away dishes and then close the whole lot when finished. I think Ikea has something like this.

I was just in CB2 and noticed these cabinets. They remind me of the cabinets used in cubicles. I had mine removed from my space and am, therefore, less interested in incorporating that look into my home. The material is also very kitsch. That being said, it would be a nice, casual addition to a guest room or child's room.

We used the IKEA Akurum kitchen wall cabinet in the bathroom as a linen cabinet: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29811848
They have a very easy system for hanging it on the wall, but it does leave a tiny gap between the back of the cabinet and the wall.
One of these days, I'll post a photo and ask for advice on how to make the space not look like we have a kitchen with a toilet in it...

I love these. Went to the store and felt one up. I envisioned buying 20 and lining my studio with them. Realistically, one would be a swell sideboard in my small dining room, hung underneath a wall mounted primitive hutch.

I never thought of using cabinetry outside of the kitchen. What a great idea! I bet you could even use medicine type cabinets and if you didn't want the mirrors to show, you could over them with cloth or decoupage them. Thanks Kyle!

If you like this look but need something more shallow, I recommend plain white, metal first aid kit boxes. I got some in different sizes from an on-line med supply co. Mounted them on the wall in a tiny bathroom. Perfect for face creams, soap bars and other small items.
