Mix Master: A Modern Kitchen With a Vintage Feel

When we toured J. Sybylla Smith's house earlier this month, we instantly fell for her idiosyncratic vintage-modern style. Here's another kitchen by another stylist that successfully incorporates modern amenities while retaining an authentic, traditional feel.

According to Danish stylist Katrine Martensen-Larsen, "Antiques are wonderful, but when it comes to kitchen units, sink, mixer tap, oven, stove and refrigerator, it is perhaps not so practical." Her solution? Mix a modern kitchen with antique furniture and lots of old accessories. We love how all the vintage kitchen accessories pop off the clean, white backdrop of this enchanting loft.

The space is great and the SMEG gives it instant appeal but seriously the dirty, rusty chairs need to go.

I see these all the time but never know the name... where can I find the metal chair (or similar style) in the first image?

The chairs are Tolix by Xavier Pauchard — from France. They are available at a range of retailers, including DWR and now, even Pottery Barn.

luv it! How high are those ceilings? i luv that big window over the door! are the floors limewashed? please post a how to on those (non polyd) floors! i love the openess that comes from no uppers or other "big kitchen remodel" cliches; the vintage touches make it homey and fun. What is that tube going across? is that the vent? and how did they get that mini up there?

I dunno. I don't think it works. I think you could have modern-functioning fixtures that are less sleek. The cabinet style is just odd with the rest of the stuff. No reason they could not be wood and still have the ss countertop...that would not be such a disconnect for me.

Wow, maybe it's the camera angle but the kitchen almost seems impractically large and spread-out. Aside from the theatrical car and the Smeg, there's not so much design going on here. It reminds me of a film set for a Hugh Grant movie, for whatever reason.

i'd like to see more pics of this space, like that barn door with the inset 'normal' sized door.

as for the sleek, modern fixtures, i think they actually go well with the sleek, vintage refrigerator. it's hard to tell, but it looks like the interior of the cabinet drawers are bright red (look through the handles).

SydneyBristow - the tube looks like it must be a vent, as it goes from the hood to the exterior wall.
