apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The Strange & Unusual Collections of Martin Gee
The World of Interiors

My recent move unearthed all kinds of treasures, like an old copy of The World of Interiors (from 2000) that I was clearly keeping for its excellent story on this UK apartment of one Martin Gee — whose space contains collections of bones, trains, vintage medical supplies, and many other odds and ends alongside accessories from the Conran Shop and MUJI.

So, who cares that this apartment is so filled with carefully arranged bizarre objects that there doesn’t appear to be any space for a human to sit, sleep, or eat? According to the article, the owner just sleeps on a bedroll on the kitchen floor next to his unusable kitchen sink. Um, that’s kind of creepy, but who cares about that either? There are more than a few incredible ideas in this space worth taking a closer look at.

I personally love the bare lightbulbs hanging from the curly red cord and the toy block “sculptures”—an idea that I actually stole when I lived in an apartment that had too many built in shelves that were begging to display something besides boring old books.

For more slightly freaky (but inspiring) collections check out the tour I took of artist William Schaff’s studio a couple of weeks ago.

Beautifully done ... but (as a female) I'm sorry to say that it creeps me out

Love it but would not want to live there. But if it was a store I would definitely shop there. What am I missing about it being especially creepy to females? (I'm not being confrontational, just curious as I am also female)

I'm not down with sleeping on a bedroll next to a non-functioning kitchen sink, but other than that, this is pretty close to my dream home. Love the wall colors! (And I'm a woman too!)

I love it all (female here) but it would be great to actually work all this into a space that has chairs/couches, some living functionality. I'm in love with that first picture, too, the blocks remind me of my toy blocks and the blue/black/beech wood is stunning!

It should be a museum or show house.
