What is Your Small Luxury?

luxury.gif

For me, nothing beats my favorite perfume for a hint of luxury that lasts &mdash even if I'm standing, sweaty from walking to work. At home, that feeling comes from my Garnet Hill linens, which are delightfully crisp. In this economy, and in the cozy fall season, small luxuries like this make us feel rich. What is your small luxury?

Another luxury of mine is my Jasper Conran glossy white china, which I use every day. What is yours? Fresh flowers from the market on Fridays? A Saturday latte and a walk? Antique tea cups for afternoon tea?

Whatever it is, I believe these small things, even though material, help us all feel more blessed, refined and luxurious — even if we're eating PB&Js on our fine bone china!

i looked into the garnet hill linens and was disappointed that their "extra deep" fitted sheets only went up to 15". i seem to have an extra extra deep mattress, and have found that the sheets i did buy would be good until the first wash when they'd shrink. i've been forced to buy king sheets and tuck them under the bed. any ideas where i can get good quality extra extra deep (18") fitted sheets would be greatly appreciated.

My small luxury is soaking in my clawfood bathtub, and drinking good bourbon (usually Bulleit or Tuthilltown) while I do my grad school reading!

Bluewick soy candles. They're pricey - but the scents are diving and not cheap-smelling. They also last for a very long time.

Good coffee and good tea are luxuries I can't do without! I get wonderful freshly ground coffee from a stand in the farmer's market. (I'm considering getting a French press as I've become increasingly dissatisfied with my coffeemaker.) The tea I drink is expensive, but I can re-steep the leaves for a second cup, so a pound lasts a very long time.

- Long, hot baths
- High-quality hand soap (I use Cucina in the Fig and Savory Flower scent)
- Fresh flowers from the farmers market every other week
- Getting my antique sofa and chair reupholstered in a high quality fabric by a furniture restorer (I paid $300 for both on Craigslist, but it's costing me $2,400 to have just the sofa reupholstered; when it's done, it will be worth more than my car!)

A cup of Tea-never fails to give me a mental break especially when I drink it from one of my tea sets.

Books. My husband and I stated that there will always be money for a book or two.

Yarn to knit with.

Classical Music-while I don't know the ends and outs by any means, just listening to it makes me feel more relaxed and elegant.

My oil perfume made specifically for me. It's heaven.

Freshly ground Colombian coffee, and the best black teas and exotic herbal teas.
L'Occitane products: Lavender hand cream, Shea Butter face buff, and Immortelle eye make-up remover (never burns).
Lindt Chili Chocolate.
D'Arches watercolor blocks ~ no matter how awful my paintings end up turning out ... it's very forgiving.
Good French preserves.
My wonderful pillow top mattress and pillows w/high count sheets.

Excellent fresh loose tea -- I order it online every 3 months or so.

Fragrance, although right now I am out of my favourite (Paestum Rose). I like to have a wardrobe of scents, most of them from indie perfumers like Frederic Malle and L'Artisan Parfumeur, which I change according to the seasons and my mood.

Savon de Marseille handsoap in all the bathrooms. Amazingly enough, the grocery store brand here in France is better than the chi-chi brand sold at Conrans -- at least the orange scent anyways.

Very finely woven white damask bedding.

Books.

Some of the best French butters (AOC) and Poulets de Bresse.

Expensive unlimited landline calls (I know I'm a dinosaur) but living in France with family in Ireland, Scotland, England and West Coast USA its great not to have to wait for cheap rate. Frequent trips to Paris and Spain. White tea. 'Flora' by Gucci and books.

Lately I haven't been spending money on much of anything but will do whatever it takes to spend money on good food. Local farmers markets are obviously more expensive than your cheap grocery stores but it's so worth the quality of the food you are getting. I agree with a lot of the above posts: great FT, organic coffee and chocolate, high quality and great smelling natural body products like bath products and skin care, and books on food.

Also: truffle oil, coconut oil, polaroid film

My luxury is IMPORTED foodstuffs: chocolate (of which I eat spectacular amounts), bananas, truffle anything. I try to limit them, and stick mostly to a locavore approach, so those imported foodstuffs have become both my luxuries & guilty pleasures.
