A New Kitchen for an Old Modern Home
New Canaan, CT

Ask and you shall receive! Earlier this week we wrote about the Survey of Modern Homes in New Canaan, CT and waxed poetic about how nice it would be to see the interiors. Then designer Lauren Fister sent over these lovely images of the newly finished kitchen in Celanese House by Edward Durell Stone (1959)...

We mentioned earlier this week that many of these New Canaan modern homes are in jeopardy of being torn down because they have not been properly maintained. We were thrilled to read Lauren's email about how she along with Stephen King and Snaidero Kitchen Design are updating a few of these old modern homes' kitchens. As any house flipping show will tell you: kitchens and bathrooms sell houses. Perhaps giving these historic modern homes new, modern features in keeping with the original spirit of the architecture will help keep them from being demolished in the future!

My least favorite architect = Edward Durell Stone.

Lincoln Center in NYC is cold and off putting to me.

SUNY Albany is hideous. And really cold in the winter.

Um... I don't know. I looked a good while, especially at the first picture. Made me think of a 1970's test lab my Dad used to work at. In fact it looks pretty darned close to this. I feel like I can't wait to get out of this kitchen... which never happens as kitchens are my favorite place to hang out in. Strange, I can't explain it, but it makes me feel uncomfortable... anyone else or is it just me?

I figured it out. The first pic looks like... a county morgue!

There's something so chilly and off-putting about this home.

This is a place where people give their opinions and reactions. As long as individuals aren't personally attacked, I think all's fair.

In this case I agree w/most of the previous posters: this place looks cold and soulless.

If my own kitchen were on AT, I'd be prepared to see comments about how cluttered and 'busy' it looked. And I wouldn't care a bit! To each his/her own... it's a big world.

I absolutely LOVE this kitchen! I'm shocked at the reaction here, since I thought a lot of people here love modern. I love the simplicity, efficiency, clean lines. I never used to like this look, but about 6 years ago I moved to Korea, and this type of kitchen is pretty popular here. It really has grown on me. I love how calm and clean it feels.

My biggest issue is that the kitchen has NOTHING on the counters, no other means to warm it up and it's not in KEEPING with the spirit of the house AT THE TIME of it's construction, it's just a contemporary, modern kitchen and that's all it is.

However that said, the layout is fine but the space from the end of the counters to the wall w/ the wall ovens seems wide and one has to WALK a ways to use the ovens, and perhaps the fridge too, which looks to be on one side of the oven.

The space itself looks fine, just needs colorful artwork to warm it up is all.

i think that its the layout... it seems to waste a lot of space with the two big pieces in the center of the room. the dark wood somehow isnt working with the floor. with the beautiful top to bottom windows, the good light is immediately blocked. what is the point of that?

plus there seems to only be seeting for two. look at that big room!!!

i dont really care, but one more thing.....when you cook, it is better to have the faucet on the same side as the oven in this case... you have to do a complete 180 turn. it was an unneccesary plan.

The morgue feeling comes from the stark moderness of it. There are no personal touches and there is no color. Though there is a lot of counter space, which I envy, there is no flow; where is the refrigerator? Maybe after it's lived in a while it will feel better. The cabinets are gorgeous, as are the fixtures, this just lacks the personal feel.
