apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Light Switch Rack by Paul Koh

Picture-1pk.gif

Apartment Therapy readers are always looking for organizing solutions for their landing strip areas. This clever one by Paul Koh may do the trick.

We spotted this powder-coated aluminum rack in the current MoMA Store catalog. You simply install it over an existing light switch (for toggle and rocker switches). The rack allows you to hang keys and store incoming or outgoing mail. Big job for a little object.

$25 each from MoMA.

OK, so maybe there are prettier things out there but this is absolutely brilliant! I can just see this being used in places where you can't punch holes in the wall. It's again, not that attractive but also not that overly noticeable either which is nice.

Genius...but a bit pricey considering the simplicity of it.

I think it would look nicer if you remove the original plastic cover from the switch. that way it's more flushed against the wall.

"I think it would look nicer if you remove the original plastic cover from the switch. "

Agreed - Seems that it was designed for that.

Here's hoping they come out with one for a double switchplate! We have an extremely narrow entry way so this would be awesome for our place.

I'm a little puzzled by this. I'm with mntngr and bepsf- it would have a cleaner look if it replaced the plastic wall plate. However, it's narrow enough that it might not cover the opening for some wall switches .

I think I'd enjoy this more if it disguised the switch rather than awkwardly accentuating it.

Wow! I could totally use that. It would be cool if they had a double switchplate though...

As a writer, I write a lot about how to cope with chemo brain. I think they should sell this in hospital gift shops. Brilliant for scattered brained cancer patients!

Eh, I think I'm the only one here who's not a fan. The thought of my keys up against the wall on those pegs concerns me ... I think it would eventually scratch my paint.

And the part on top, where you put your mail? What's the point? I deal with my mail immediately after reaching into my mailbox. I attend to bills right away (or at least put the pile of bills on the coffee table to pay within the hour) and recycle the junk mail. My outgoing mail goes inside of my purse. Plus, it looks like mail would easily tip over ... I've only just seen the pic and not the actual product, but that's the vibe I'm getting.

I dunno...I get more than 3 pieces of mail.

Finally, a genuinely useful, well-thought out design (!)-- perfect for keys right inside the door, and the mail thingy would also be a good place to put outgoing mail, as a reminder to oneself.

The fact that this thing fits onto existing light switch screws makes it tres elegant.

This is old news. Parents have one in their house built in the 60's.

Saw it at MoMA and wondered when it was going to make AT.

I think it just calls attention to an unattractive piece of utility.

Also, I say it every time, but PLEASE let's do away with "landing strip" as decorating slang. It's already slang for something else: pubic hair.

Leehou-- You say that this design has been around since the 1960's-- a hook & catchall that screws to a light plate?

I can neither confirm or deny... but, since this thing is so well-conceived and understated compared to most contemporary design, it doesn't shock me to learn that it may have been ripped-off from another era!

see, now this is a "landing strip" i could use.

The way I swat at the light switch without looking... I could see myself stabbing myself with those pegs. Maybe that's just my carelessness talking. I'd probably rather a small hanging organizer right next to the switch. I could see how some people could find this useful, though.

Update: We now have it attached to the light switch for our coat closet. So far, so good.
