DIY Glowing Headboard: Cheap, Quick & Easy

02_06_LightBed2.jpg

We love Melinda's colorful loft bedroom (as does Bacon), and it has a good deal to do with the drama. Rich, deep color, luxurious textiles and lovely, low lighting. The key to a great space is knowing where to spend your money — Melinda may have splurged on the duvet cover but she created the subtle glow behind this headboard for less than $7. Follow the jump to see how...

It's rope light! Garish lawn decor for some, sophisticated glowing bedroom effect for others. Tucked neatly out of sight, rope light (or any inexpensive string light) spans the length of your headboard to create a soffit-type light effect. 6 feet for under $7 at any hardware store and usually CVS.

I'd rather see a pair of sidetables with some fabulous lamps...

I think "karma police" is an oxymoron. How about you comment on some topics?

The headboard glow could work, but I think it's somewhat overdone and tends to look tacky. An easy way to fix up a college dorm situation, but you'll want to grow out of this phase eventually.

do tell us, what phase is next? belittling things other people like with an ever-present air of superiority?

I think the glow is quite nice, especially given the hidden light source. thank you for sharing this option of alternative lighting in a bedroom.

a question regarding the lovely duvet: has it been washed? I'm curious to know how the ruching will be affected.

foodefafa- I did say it could work. I also think sometimes people just fix up things with a quick and dirty idea and it doesn't come off as nice as it could. The phase when you care how things look and you develop an eye for the whole picture is what comes next. I associate throwing Xmas lights at a problem as sort of cheap and juvenile, while we have seen the effect applied well, so it can happen if you really want it.

foodefafa - I'm pretty sure it's the Cirrus duvet, from Anthropologie. Mine washes just fine (I run it on delicate, then tumble dry on low for half a cycle and hang it to dry completely).
