We’ve been ruminating about doing something different with the pendant lamps in our kitchen. Currently we have the hanging Ikea Melodi pendant lamps but the white lamps against the white walls have grown just a little too vanilla. So when we stumbled across this clever, fire-hazard-in-the-making lamp on Ikeahacker we were dubious yet intrigued…
This hacker dressed an old Ikea uplight with…post-it notes. He points out that you need to use a cool bulb like a fluorescent. And while we’re skeptical that the lamp looks nearly as fun off as it does on or that you can really pull it off without looking like you just put post-it notes all over your lamp, it got us wondering about what else we could do to our Melodis to dress them up a bit.
Any ideas? Have you Ikea hacked any of their lamps?

Maybe you could do something creative with perforated metal sheeting. either wrap the pendant with one wide sheet, making a cylinder that is the diameter of the widest part of the current pendant.
or. maybe just cut strips of this sheeting the same size as the post-its, and follow the same pattern as the above "hack".
after all you're really just asking for ways to cover the ikea pendant, right?

using a cfl should reduce the whole fire hazard risk....seeing as how they don't get that hot.

This is a rather elegant solution of what to do with my building grade ceiling fan.

Oh goodness. Don't settle for post-its!
These made-over melodi lamps are STUNNING...and just as easy!

Thanks for the link mcb23, those are really neat! (And yes, definitely much nicer looking than post-its.)
