This lovely coffee table, inspired by ice floes, from Council Design prompted us to think about using a grouping of smaller coffee tables to create the sense of one big table, divided only by small gaps. Have you ever tried a grouping of coffee table surfaces to create a larger table?...

The Layers Table, which can be separated and used as individual end tables, is made of translucent Corian and "light filters through Layers’ various layers to dramatic effect."
Obviously there's no comparison between this elegant piece and Ikea Lack side tables but a while ago we used 2 of the Ikea tables to create one coffee table. Have you used 2 or more small tables to create a bigger table?
i like this idea as well, but have never done it. The image, however, prompts me to finally ask the question, *WHY* do vendors take photos of white objects in front of white backgrounds?!?!!!! Ikea does this all the time and it's absolutely frustrating.

I have 3 LACK side tables as my coffee table right now. I can either have 3 in a row in front of the couch or as I have them now, in an L shape with 2 in front of the couch and 2 in front of the chair.

i used to have four lack side tables! i was in love with the effect of a gorgeous credenza that i first saw on inhabitat, and then it made its way over to design*sponge and probably here as well; it was natural wood with laminate cutouts in a naturalistic pattern.
my college student extreme redux of that was to buy two birch lack tables and two white ones, and then push them together for a checkered square that was actually really pretty.

Same here with the Lack tables. We have a small kitchen table and no dining room. If we have more than a couple people over, we usually just eat party-style with people taking plates and eating wherever they want in the living room. But if we want to be slightly more formal, like for Passover, we push all the Lacks together in the middle of the room and sit on cushions around it. (Before we had the Lacks, we once made a table by setting a piece of plywood on a couple of Rubbermaid bins and throwing a tablecloth over it).
