Locally Made Bowls Crafted from Fallen Trees

Spencer Peterman turns fallen, rotting trees into beautiful bowls that can stretch far beyond the kitchen. These natural beauties, filled with something colorful, could be used as permanent centerpieces on the dining table or coffee table or simply displayed on a shelf in their own right...

We spotted Scott's bowls on Daily Grommet. He scours his land in Western Massachusetts (Turners Falls) for fallen trees, then sometimes waits patiently for them to further decompose to create the abundant craggly lines and markings. After turning the wood on a lathe to make the bowls, they are then kiln dried to prevent further cracking.

The bowls range in price from $44 for a 9 inch bowl, all the way up to $495 for a 21 inch bowl, with four sizes and prices in between. These would make a charming housewarming gift. Check out Spencer's website here. (You'll also find cutting boards, salad tossers and more!)

These bowls are stunning. It was a such a treat visiting Spencer and his master craftspeople out in Turner Falls during full-throttle foliage season! Very nice man, amazingly talented and totally unassuming.

I'm pretty excited to see one of our Grommets featured on the esteemed Apartment Therapy. Thanks for finding and featuring Spencer Peterman, Kyle.

Our mission is to uncover inventive products and crafts like these compelling bowls, and tell their interesting, true stories. We find one "Grommet" a day and give it a powerful people-powered platform where it can be found, supported, and loved. Why should WalMart decide what products get made and sold? We--together--can do it, instead.

We'd welcome any ideas from the Apartment Therapy community for Grommets we should research. You would have wonderful ideas, fo' sure.
