apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! DIY Doormat Using Flor Carpet Samples

Our dog, Bacon, likes to "island hop" around the apartment — scurrying from one Flor rug to the next. But he's also consumed by a steamy love affair with our neighbor's Rottweiler (that's right) and every time he hears her going to and fro, he sits by the door and longs to be with her. And he does so with his little behind on the cold, hard floor. Since we have a lot of Flor tiles, we also have a lot of sample squares and, now, we had a reason to put them to use...

Our heavy duty doormat lives outside the door, so we thought it'd be nice to create a mini mat inside the door, making use of our many sample tiles. Although this would be a supplemental doormat, we still ruled out any squares in the shag family or that were too lightly colored in order to minimize dirt visibility and maintenance. Sample tiles do not have perfectly square edges — although you could certainly trim them yourself with any utility knife — so our final pattern was dictated by which tiles actually sat flush against each other.

We love accidental design and this is a great example of how easily something can just come together with what you already have in your home. Even we were surprised with how natural this little rug looks! Not only does Bacon now have a cozy island from which to profess is undying love (through the door), we humans also have a lovely doormat to complete our foyer and a useful solution for our extra carpet samples!

Agree. Bacon is in a league of his own. And just tonight I found some old Flor samples and was debating what to do with them. Good idea!

I did the same thing with my FLOR tile samples. It really makes a cute little "patchwork" rug. But really, mine pales in comparison because it is lacking an adorable Frenchie!

Kayla here -

Bacon's very glad that everyone is as happy with his new rug as he is. Yes, the samples are connected - we used the leftover dots that came with our full size tiles (Flor always sends an abundance of those things). And, yes, Bacon's girlfriend shares his sentiments in full...we have the scratch marks on the outside of the door to prove it :-)

I have so much love for Bacon, I really do. Is this creepy? I don't care, my heart melts every time a see a picture of him. The fact that he is in love with a rotti is just additional proof that he is a kick ass dog. See...didn't even read the post, maybe Bacon is a distraction.

glad i'm not the only one who gushes on bacon when he ends up in a post :)

to "sudlow jewelry" - have you checked out the french bulldog rescue network? you should! adoption fees aren't much & they're sooo worth it!
