Look! Whimsical Half Bath in Brookline Kitchen

Earlier this month we highlighted the primary bathroom from our very first house tour — Rita & Morgan's delightful sherbet colored space with big round mirrors — remarking how much we loved the fun, lightheartedness of it all. As Kitchen and Bath month closes out, we wanted to show their other bathroom some love. It's a tiny powder room tucked right inside their kitchen and, though small, it is the main bath used by guests and it is full of wit and whimsy...

Bright and airy, the half bath's paper moon creates a soft, diffused light that doesn't feel overwhelming in the shallow space. A mirror placed on the side wall opposes the small, high window, making the room feel much larger and reflecting tons of light without sacrificing privacy from guests on the patio — and yes, that is a carousel horse in the yard.

Other whimsical touches that make us love this space: before you enter the bathroom, a silver parrot's head acts as the pull for the sliding pocket door, right next to the teacup-and-saucer sconce above the bank of light switches. Once inside, sheer, nearly invisible fabric suspends three translucent vases in the corner (because there's no counter space) and a small punch of black from the towel holder makes you look twice — it's a miniature ceramic man sucked through the wall, only his legs remaining.

As we gear up for Small Cool month it's great to be reminded that tiny spaces can still have big ideas.

I think that given the choice, I'd rather have the mirror above the sink with a simple lightfixture than the paper moon...

Ooooh! I'd love that paint color for my bathroom - what is it?

i love it. :)
i think the paper moon is whimsical, but not childish. i'd totally have it in my half-bath.
