Look! Plasti Dip Put to Use

plastidipwhite.jpg

Remember Plasti Dip? We first heard about it when Aaron blogged it here several years ago. But we had never seen anyone actually use it. When we recently admired a cheery tomato-red hook in our friend Camilla's bathroom, she said she had used Plasti Dip to transform the coral shaped hook from its original white.

Here's the before photo, click past the jump to see the result!

We love how the new red hook stands out and takes center-stage of the white door! Plasti Dip is is an industrial coating which is designed to make the rubberized non-slip grips on tools, steering wheels, and automative parts. In this case, using traditional spray paint wouldn't have adhered very well to the porcelain. We love how Plasti Dip coats the hook perfectly, and adds a soft, velvety red, matte-rubber finish. Its hard to see this in photographs, but the finish is also pliable, and doesn't dry hard like paint.

If you're thinking of using this for a project, Camilla did warn that the fumes were strong and that like spray paint, you should use it outdoors. We can think of so many creative uses for this!

Where is this hook from?

It's from Anthropologie - they sold red ones as well as white, so this is a bit of an odd project. I don't think they carry either anymore.

I seem to recall that you can get this stuff in red, yellow, black and white only. Still true?

Looks like you can mix your own colors now:

I could totally envision myself going on a Plasti Dip binge and coating a plethora of random things all over my house...

Uh, I bought that exact same hook from Anthropologie and it was already red--I thought the white was the "after" shot!

Maybe she wanted the red but they were sold out. It happens.

You can still get the hook in red at Anthropologie.com. It's on sale for 2.95. Look in the sale section.

ooooh, I agree kristenlake, I could see myself going on a plasti dip binge as well! For one, I'd love to dip the bottom 8 inches of the legs of my boring wood kitchen barstools. And I'm guessing that, like me, they bought the hook in white but later realized the red would look a lot better. I like the soft finish on the plasti dipped hook way better than the shiny red one that anthropologie sells.

CHGAM, I think you might be thinking of a different product:

I was actually just thinking of doing this to my silver hook, as I missed out on the red hook as well. Glad to see it turned out so nicely! :-)

I've had a lot of success using Plasti Dip for projects:

I love the stuff and usually get it from:

I could never find the hook in the red color, only the white and metal finish. I looked and looked and hoped they would eventually have the hook in red, but neither the website (at the time I was looking) nor the store near me ever had the hook, only the drawer handle in red. I finally bought some in the metal finish and primed and painted them in red. I never thought to use the plasti dip and now I wish I had, it looks great.

kristinlake519,

I'm with you. That product would be dangerous in my hands. I'm thinking if it can be painted on steps in strips or spots to prevent skidding. Does anyone know?

Haha, I'm with everyone who bought these in red originally from Anthro... on sale too! They're in my closet... I was a little disappointed though, it was harder than it should have been to hang them due to the size of the screw holes and the thickness of the hook, and also because if you bumped the rubber coating with the drill at ALL it ripped right off.... but still cute!
