Look! Puma City Prefab Under Construction in Boston

We snapped these photos the other day of Puma City under construction at Fan Pier, near the ICA. The large canti-levers mimic the museum's and together they create quite a statement along the waterfront. In case you haven't seen the advertising all over the city, lucky Boston is the only North American stop for the Volvo Ocean Race and, coincidentally, the only place to experience Puma City. Now, we know this is a retail space and not a home, but we here at Apartment Therapy love prefab and shipping container architecture so this may be the best real world, thoroughly vetted example yet...

The NYC firm LOT-EK has a long history of container architecture and they designed the 11,000 sf structure made from twenty-four, forty-foot long, steel shipping containers — each weighing in at eleven tons. PUMA City consists of three levels of containers stacked on top of one another and slightly shifted to create natural outdoor spaces with large overhangs and wide open terraces. Cut that down to maybe 4 containers and 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and you've got what sounds like a pretty appealing home.

Not only is the design top notch but this structure is truly universal and thoroughly vetted, meeting international building codes, able to withstand dramatic climate changes, and able to be rapidly assembled on-site. Construction began on April 7 and it will be open on April 25, running through May 16. It will then get packed back up and shipped to Galway, Ireland.

Having heard a lot about the possibilities of shipping container architecture, we can't wait to really get in and check this out firsthand!
