My Great Outdoors: Jen & Jeremy's Garden Rescue

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: When we purchased our small ranch a few years ago, the front yard was completely overgrown. The lawn, in particular was a mess, and the front walk was a hazard. Even worse, the evergreens lining the foundation were so tall that they were blocking the morning sun from shining through our front windows. All of the other homes on our street have beautiful yards and we were hoping to add a little curb appeal so as not to be the "sore thumb" on the block...

How did you create it? We started by digging out everything along the foundation, with the exception of a few good-looking evergreens and rhododendrons. We also took out the weed-ridden front lawn and the flagstones that made up the front path. We re-planted the foundation with low-maintenance shrubs and perennials including knockout roses, euonymus, and hydrangea. Our tiny side yard got a makeover using perennials hardy to our zone (clematis, dianthus, cornflower, etc.) and a new path made from the flagstone re-purposed from our old front walk. Jeremy laid the new front walk with brick pavers to match the front steps. To complete the makeover, the front lawn was replaced with new sod and the house got a fresh coat of paint.

The best part about the makeover is the fact that everything (with the exception of the flower boxes on the front steps) is perennial so all we have to do is water and weed and it still looks great!

I am clematis crazy, but I only have a deck, so I have to limits myself. Your walkway is going to be amazing. I hope those roses by the door smell; I wake up in the morning to go out to my deck just to smell my roses.

Nice. Now its time to get rid of the grass and plant native wildflowers on your lawn!
