August Escapes: Antiques in Southern New Hampshire
Boston

antiques1.jpgWe love getting out of the city, but, with all the rainy New England weather this season, we have had to find indoor escapes. Antique shops in Boston are often geared toward tourists and, we think, are overpriced. So we hopped in our Zipcar (no paying for gas) and explored some antique shops in southern New Hampshire...

You might want to consider renting a larger Zipcar, though, in case you want to purchase something like this adorable bench. We visited Windsor Cottage and several other small shops in the small town of Hillsboro, New Hampshire while we were visiting family. The great thing about New England is that there are great antique shops along the way to almost everywhere.

Our advice is to find a piece you love—especially those that might need a little work—then discuss the price with the owner. Also, think about creative uses for each piece: an old mantle as a headboard or reclaimed wood frame windows and doors as wall art. You don't need an apartment full of antiques, just one or two great finds can really stand out and add a great dose of personality to your space. Happy travels!

Growing up in southern New Hampshire I can attest to the great antique shopping. If anyone is making the trek be sure to include the "antique highway" from the Lee traffic circle to the Epsom traffic circle. There has got to be over 30 stores just on this one route alone.

Places like this are all over West Michigan. I miss it and enjoy you your adventure, which is ironically the basis for one of my short stories. Go fig.
