A Better World by Design 09 starts tomorrow here in Providence and brings together local and global design luminaries for a series of presentations, workshops, and events focusing on “the power of design, technology, and enterprise to reshape our communities and sustain our environment.”

The conference, which runs through October 4, was founded and is organized by a group of students from Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design and is now in its second year. The opening speaker is Rhode Island architect Joe Haskett of Distill Studio whose Box Office project (pictured above) uses recycled shipping containers to form a 12 unit office building. Other speakers include architect Stefan Behnisch, co-founder of Design Observer William Drenttel, founder of Project H Design Emily Pilloton, and RISD president John Maeda. Panels and workshop topics range from Architecture in the Developing World to Sustainable Agriculture to Urban Arts programs.

Tickets for the general public are $120 ($50 for students) and include all the conference events as well as meals for the weekend. Visit www.abetterworldbydesign.com for a full schedule and more information.

This building is spectacular! It reminds me of what they had built out for Puma City at Fan Pier during the Volvo Ocean Race celebrate, was it the same type of building design? Love it!
