speaking of local resources... i am looking for a bathroom vanity and countertop (perhaps not from the same place). anyone had great experience buying these locally (i'm in somerville)?
i'm open to home depot and lowe's, but wondering if there are hidden gems where i can find a great deal on a nice looking vanity (60") and stone top. thoughts?
thanks!

i always have great luck with craigslist. also, take a look at eddie's in somerville (right behind porter square).

KateE, if you're looking for something antique, there are a few architectural salvage places around Boston that might have something. There is one in the South End, I believe. Try Googling "architectural salvage Boston" and that one should come up. I can't recall the exact name at the moment.

I'm wondering what folks think about the quality and service provided from that Fresh Pond stalwart Sozio?
I must say, I love their selection of retro-inspired appliances, but am not sure if said is worth the expense?

I have a question for you Boston folks... what is the best find you've ever had at TJMaxx/Homegoods/Marshalls? I think some are better than others. The Marshalls on Boylston is so good for shoes and clothes, but not so much for home stuff. The homegoods in Saugus is excellent for home stuff.
Does anyone else have sugestions for good/bad TJMaxx stores?

KateE, you should check with the granite companies. THey usually have a salvage section where you get get a decent sized piece of granite at a deep discount. Check Selva Stone in Framingham or International Stone in Woburn.

this is far from boston, but the marshall's in fitchburg (don't ask how i ended up there) is awesome both for clothes and home stuff. i got ralph lauren and dkny bedding there with red stickers, bamboo cutting boards and stacking boxes for cheap. it's like a treasure hunt every you go in. i highly recommend going there just for the drive. route 2 is gorgeous this time of year. the max in wal-lex is pretty good too :)
i am soo excited about the boston AT :) we have great style here and now we can share places for acquiring those special things :)

Kate E - there is a stone resource place that you can see from the bridge on Prospect St between Inman and Union Squares. My mom had great luck going to a place like that and asking what they had for off-cuts: she got like 20 feet of granite countertop at half off. She paid a little extra to have them make more specific cuts. Def. worth a try.
Eddie's furniture is great, also check out GreenHouse Antiques up on Mass Ave past Porter (corner of MassAve & Meacham). LOTS of stuff crammed in there.

Fabric Question while I'm here: Aside from Marimekko are there any other good resources for graphic, modern fabrics in Boston? (totally carless here so it's got to be walkable/T-able) Thanks in advance.

Modfan, if you're still reading, Freddie Farkel's carries some Marimekko fabrics... If you can get past their weird name (took me a while), you can find some good fabrics there, especially if you look at their remnants. They are a discount place so their prices are supposed to be cheaper, although I don't fabric shop enough to be able to verify that. They are in Watertown and you could bike from Alewife?
