Using Shoe Pockets to Organize Dresser Contents

_MG_2634.jpg

A while ago we decided to take the challenge of storing all of our clothes in our very small bedroom closet and forgoing a dresser altogether. This forces us to keep a slim inventory of clothes, reduces the furniture in the bedroom, and keeps the visual focus of the room on the bed which helps us sleep better. When we made the transition to keeping all of our clothes in the closet...

We decided to use a shoe pocket organizer. We keep socks, underwear, tights and other small miscellaneous accessories in the pockets. The clear-ish pockets let us see the contents and indulge our compulsive desire to organize and see things by color. We've also used this system for clients of our organizing business with great success.

Have you tried this? Do you use shoe pockets to organize other items?

I have two of these organizers in my laundry closet. I call them my "vertical junk drawers" -- they have all those odds and ends that you don't need often (birthday candles, extra packages of shoelaces, etc.) It's great because things are always easy to find, and there's no need for a piece of furniture -- or worse, an actually home organization system -- to store them.

Oh yes, I have been using shoe pockets to organize my socks for awhile now. They would get into a big knotty mess when I kept them in a dresser drawer, so it definitely keeps them more organized. It also made me pare down my enormous and redundant sock collection so they would all fit!

I also live without a dresser - there's just no room for one in my small bedroom. However, I keep my underwear in my nightstand drawers.

But shoe pockets are a wonderful organizing tool. I've blogged about some of the many ways to use them.

I have a dresser inside my closet. I guess that's instead of shelves or systems.

My sis and I had those when we were kids - for art supplies.
Now we have a small organizer in our tiny BR closet (no space for dresser either) - it holds belts and such. There're boxes for the socks. We have a drawer in the bathroom for underwear.

Here's a pic of the closet: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3218/2978202499_87bc80eae1.jpg?v=0

I have one in my bedroom closet. It holds sunglasses, scarfs, mittens, tights, hand lotion, and tons of other stuff that I have used to have trouble finding a home for.

I gave up dressers quite a while ago as I move too often. I like the look of your organizer and will be getting one. Now i use those hanging cubby hole type things, which I do like.

I use one in our mudroom closet. It's half filled with shoes, but the rest hold misc items - it's great. Now I'm thinking of getting another for our bedroom closet. We already have a rack over the door holding belts and ties, but I think this could get draped on top. We've had to get creative with a tiny closet and already stuffed dressers. Thanks for the idea!

Also I see you nailed it to the door instead of using those over the door hooks, which I hate seeing hang over when the closet door is closed. Another good idea!

Oh I do this! I also use them to organize mittens/hats/scarves in my coat closet. That way when i want my pink gloves and the matching hat, it's easy to find :)

I have one in the laundry room. It stores most of my cleaning supplies, dust rags, etc. When I'm cleaning, I grab the supplies I'll need for the tasks I'm about to go do and put them in a caddy to carry through the house.

I use a small closet with shelves instead of a closet.

And I use a shoe holder in my office to hold tubes of paint, brushes, rulers and straight edges, etc.

These are the BEST. For home or office. I've used them for both. And yes, you can nail into wall too. I have my sneakers and small gym items in one on the wall behind my closet door. That way I could have hooks on the door and still use the space behind there.

i don't have shoe pockets, but i use one of the hanging cubbies for scarves, hats, and gloves. it's between the coats and another hanging cubby for shoes, so it also serves as a buffer.
