In the world of wire chairs there isn't much inspiration beyond Eames and Bertoia. But newcomers Massproductions, the collaboration of Chris Martin and Magnus Elebäck, recently launched their first collection called Tio during the Stockholm Furniture Fair. This simple, elegant form and modern profile is helping to lift us out of that mid-century mindset...

It didn't come as a surprise that the designer behind the chair, Chris Martin, used to be Jasper Morrison's right hand man. The collection consists of chairs and tables made of steel wire produced on a computer-controlled bending machine.
Here is the designer's very pragmatic description of how this collection came to be:
The design for "Tio" was the end result of a few months of thinking, sketching and sculpting. My point of departure was to arrange a fan of wires into a comfortable seat and then connect them in a straightforward and logical frame, which minimized the amount of steel used. So really the appeal comes from pragmatic thinking, executed within the restraints of the materials characteristics and according to an industrial production process. Sounds clinical, but the result is something I find very pleasing.

There is something elemental and elegant about these chairs that just feels right and we look forward to seeing more work from Massproductions. It's refreshing to see designers going back to basics, producing pieces that consider more than just simple aesthetics, yet — when finished — seem all about them.
I can see the lounge chair in an all white cottage style room, with light woods and white floors. I do like the shadows they cast too.
