These photos from interior designer Kathy Dalwood's web site (which we love), provide inspiration on playing up the insides of bookcases to add depth to a collection, or detail to a room.
This is a nice look and great inspiration, but I have the feeling that the shelves are not painted but laminate instead - the lines on the edges are just too perfect for being painted.

i just did this to my bookcases! it looks great, the edges were a little tough, though. we're moving in a couple weeks so i haven't tested them out with books and such, but i like the color they add to the room already!

What kind of paint would anyone suggest for painting laminate bookshelves, primarily in the interest of my books NOT sticking to it. Any experiences?

I am really trying to awaken my inner DIY and have tried a few paint projects at home projects with less than 100% satisfaction. What kind of paint and paint brushes/rollers would one use for this type of bookcase projects? How does one achieve the super smooth, shiny finish? My paint projects have tended to end up a but uneven and flat....I am wondering if it is the paint or the tools I am using.
