apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Best Product: Precision Pet Pen

When we were preparing our apartment for Bacon we had to figure out how to block off the six-foot-wide doorways in our apartment because the usual baby gate solution just wasn't wide enough. We found the Precision Pet Pen and it has proved to be one of the most useful puppy purchases yet...

The Precision Pet Pen is made up of eight 2' wide panels and can be configured in a number of different ways, including a 16' fence or up to a 5' circle. We use it to as a fence to divide the living room from the rest of the house when we are at home and, since Bacon is still a puppy and not trustworthy yet, we make a large pen in the living room when we leave him home alone. He seems to like this best because it is open play space and big enough for his crate (bed), too. And he gets to stay in the same place which makes it his place—very important for little pups.

We would say it's near perfect but it is fairly heavy when we need to move it and the metal feet have done a number on the finish of our hardwood floors. We are thinking of something to put on the bottom so it doesn't scratch but we haven't found a solution that will stay put and is puppy proof. Overall, we would highly recommend it for people living with large, open floor plans that are hard to divide off to keep your puppy out of trouble.

No Bacons were harmed in the making of this post—he was in his pen while we painted our foyer to keep his white coat paint-free.

We bought the same thing for our pup Maple because she freaked out in a crate and we live in a not so sound proof building, so barking fits at 2am weren't negotiable.

It served us well for 6 months and stopped her from eating our couch (yeah, that was a fun day!) but she's now discovered how to jump over and out. Luckily, she's moved past the chewing phase and spends her days free.

We also had problems with it scratching and ending up putting down a large puppy throw blanket. Not the prettiest solution, but keeping the floors scratch free made it worth it.

I have one for my pup, but I purchased it at Toys R Us. They make the same thing for little kids, but it can run between $10-$20 cheaper than the one at Petco. Which only proves that people are willing to shell out more cash for their pets than their kids.

It's a great investment, but buy it at at Toys or Babies R Us and save yourself some cash.

i've though about something like this for my corgie Rocky. His thing is, he likes to chew everything, and i mean everything. Even though he is over 2 now, he won't get out of this phase. He doesn't mind being in his crate while we work and often wandering in there when we're home, but i wish he could have more room. I've though about sectioning off an entire room in it, but it would have to be completely bare, and even the walls (you'll see next) would be a possible target.

We can't let him roam free since even though we're home, he manages to eat socks, anything random plastic, a plant, underwear, paper, pillows, his own dog pillow dry wall, and glass. Don't go screaming to PETA on the last 2... One of the dry wall times he did it from within his crate, pretty impressive i might say, but didn't make me happy. The other time as he laid next to a chair and we watched a movie, he's like a ninja... The glass was a vase he knocked off of a table and preceded to try and inhale it before i could get there. I swear he has no concept of pain.

I used one of those for my Chester when he was a pup and it was wonderful! It gave him a safe, secure area that was all his own and it's easy to move from room to room. When he was really little I put a heavy duty vinyl shower curtain liner under it just in case he had an accident and then put his crate, water bowl, toys and some old towels in so he had his own little doggy condo!

jmorey, are you giving you corgi enough exercise and interaction? I love corgis but never wanted to have once because they are super intelligent and therefore prone to destructive behaviour when their bored. I have known several corgis over the years and their owners said that for smallish dogs they are very high energy and need several good walks a day.

Good luck to you and I hope he settles down soon!

These are great. They make them in different heights for dogs of all sizes. I will say it worked wonders for me and my golden retriever puppy until he was about 4 months old. Then he learned that he could jump against the side and knock the whole thing over.

jmorey - my last two pups were chewers too, I've been down that drywall road too. bitter apple saved me some, but more importantly giving him what is ok to chew works best. frankly, he sounds bored, and bored dogs often chew up whatever is in their path. the frozen kongs were a lifesaver for me, as well as getting creative to hiding some small treats in their area for them to find throughout the day. it really does work, and I begin to find it fun too. I would take men's tube socks and tie it into knots and knots to hide the treat; or mens work gloves and stuff a treat or two into the finger and give it to them. It made them work really hard to get it, and helped relieve some of the anxiety. Between those and the kong, worked like a charm.

I have a "play pen", bought for my airedale when she first came home, for a similar doorway problem, it looks pretty much the same, but my version came with cut plastic tubes that slip over the bottom corners to protect the floor. She is a year old now and the pen only comes up to her chest, but she doesn't jump it even though she can easily. She loves her pen, her protected area to go and rest. Thank goodness because she is not a fan of that crate.

Bacon is so cute - we had to make up restricters to keep out child out of the cats bedroom, otherwise the food and water would be played with and the cats needed a private spot. We made out out of old timber fit to the area, we could step over them, the cats had a hole through them.

bacon is the frikkin cutest dog ever! - next to my boston puppy anyways :)

great post & great comments! i've been looking into these pens versus rocco's kennel lately but have been worried my hyper pup will knock it right down.

has anyone with a hyper terrier (i.e. boston or similar activity level) had good experiences with this type of pen? thanks for any info!
