Many Boston and Cambridge residents live in homes considered to be "period houses" — basically anything built between the 1700s and 1940. If your home falls in this category you may be familiar with the dilemma of how to renovation such a space, whether to stay true to the home's period or move it into more modern times. Charlie Allen, principal of Charlie Allen Restorations in Cambridge, is holding a class tomorrow night at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, specifically focused on renovation tips for these conflicted homeowners...

Course Description:
The Cambridge area features a wide array of period residential architecture. These homes add tremendous character and appeal to our neighborhoods. But they also pose renovation dilemmas for their owners. Join Charlie Allen, principal of Charlie Allen Restorations in Cambridge, for a discussion of historic renovation solutions, including the best ways to integrate modern amenities while preserving period charm; methods for determining historically appropriate designs, paint colors, and materials; tips for maximizing energy efficiency; and selecting the right builder for your project. Charlie Allen founded his Cambridge–based company dedicated to historic renovations in 1978. He is a former chairman of the board, president, and education chairperson of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, Eastern Massachusetts Chapter, and is still a member.

I'm so glad those buildings were moved before the financial crisis hit. I'd hate to think what might have happened to them otherwise!

LOL.. For those who don't know the story about the house above: Harvard University paid a million bucks to shut down a huge main thoroughfare in Cambridge; take down all of the bus, power. and telephone wires; and move the house (and accompanying carriagehouse) 3 blocks.

It was kind of amazing to see this mo-fo rolling down the street at .2 miles per hour.

A project near and dear to my heart. I have mentioned it a few times, but I am a historic preservationist. My blog is really new, but I have been writing not only about my home, but other homes built by the same builder/architect, as well as giving information on how to do your own renovations and restorations.

But most importantly, I offer preservation advice on interiors, exteriors and landscaping, for FREE via the internet. :)

http://cottageofstone.blogspot.com is my blog. People tend to send me emails rather than comment - but I really like comments, too! :)
