apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Ashley's 'Lemon Zest' & 'Eternal Light' Kitchen
Room for Color - East #28

thumbs up

Name: Ashley
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Type of Home: rental apartment

Color Inspiration: There isn't any direct sunlight and only one tiny window in this small kitchen. Since the kitchen is the most important room in a home, I wanted it to be full of happiness and light, so I chose the brightest color ever! I love the way this yellow can go from borderline neon, to the warmest deep gold depending on the time of day. I've had the walls this color for almost a year and I still am so happy every time I look at it!

Give Ashley a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Colors Used: Behr Lemon Zest (S-G-390), Freshaire Eternal Light (FA020)

Color Tip: I would never use wall to wall color, to me that's just as boring as plain white. Breaking up the color makes it stand out more and isn't so overwhelming. It allows you to use colors that might seem intimidating or audacious. Plus, when half the walls are neutral, color doesn't seem like such a huge commitment, which is important when you don't own your home.

I have a hard time with the cabinets against the yellow. Would your landlord let you paint those...?

The cabinets are pretty new, so I think the landlord would not be cool with painting them. But, yes, I agree... the cabinets are the bane of my existence, and I've been trying to find a way to change them (other than knobs) for over a year. If anyone has suggestions for landlord friendly/removable/changeable solutions I would be so grateful!

On Decorating Cents, Cy Winship put contact paper on cabinets to dress them up and they are temporary. The cabinets on the show had a smooth veneer on top so I am not sure if contact paper works different directly on the wood. Btw, contact paper is super cheap.

Or you can remove the cabinet doors for an open look and replace the doors when you move.

The colors are great but the yellow doesn't work with the beige floor.

In general I like your kitchen, but like a few others, I don't think that particular wall color is quite working. However, I think you could still find a yellow that works with those cabinets (and even the floor). You have a very cool yellow on the walls--I think a warmer yellow would probably be less jarring and would still work with the blue accents.

If you decide to repaint, make sure you test swatches right along the edge of the cabinetry. I had several different yellows when I was looking for the right shade and the side-by-side really helped. I was shocked at which color I chose, but it really worked.

that contact paper idea sounds pretty good...ive got horrible white laminate wood trim nonsense for cabinets...i might try it.

I think it's wonderful. Something about the colors suggests that the outdoors is all around, just waiting to rush in with fresh breezes and plenty of light (shaded by the trees of course). I disagree with some of the other people who don't think the colors work together. This is a matter of personal taste & feeling, so you need to go with what makes YOU feel good. I assume that you liked it, or you wouldn't have entered it in the contest. As far as my feelings go, I love what you've done and urge you to keep it as it is.

I really like this yellow color here, even though it's a little out there in terms of brightness.

I think the cabinets are fine as they are. What's not working for me is the white walls. I think you should paint them a gray, to complement the countertops and cabinets. At least the wall with the window...it'll make the light coming in from it seem that much brighter. The other white wall, with the two doors, you should paint the same yellow. Leave the doors white, so it won't be overwhelming.
