apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Roundup: Laundry Hampers, High & Low

We finally live in an apartment with room enough to hide our laundry bin in the closet, but for many small space dwellers, this is not an option. Tucked neatly in the corner of a bedroom or bathroom, a laundry hamper is usually an item we'd rather have blend into the background than call attention to itself. This is our roundup of alternatives to the ubiquitous wicker hamper, priced high and low...

After an extensive search, I decided on this one from Target for several reasons:http://www.target.com/Michael-Graves-Design-Spring-Up-Hamper/dp/B000P6CBIS/qid=1237836433/ref=br_1_14/181-2919778-8026925?ie=UTF8&node=13988021&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=13988021&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=8

--bag is removable, durable, washable
--the bag doesn't slide over the edge of the base and there are no hooks to break
--the bag holds two full loads of laundry despite as slim profile
--the base is sturdy and the cover is washable

I've had it for over a year and frequently carry/drag full loads down the steps and both the bag and the base look brand new.

Perfect timing! I just became obsessed with this one, but can't rationalize the price:

Anyone know of anything similar? It doesn't have to be a double, it's the open weave I like so much.

AT always seems to be inside my head! I've be struggling over hamper solutions for my small bedroom. I'm REALLY trying to get away from the wickery, seagrass-y thing. And stainless steel seems like it would look like a recycling bin. I have limited space and no room in my closet so it needs to not drive me crazy aesthetically.

I've been considering stacking two of these west elm deep drawer closet storage units, which fit perfectly in my laundry designated spot. I do laundry a couple of times a week so I'm not overly concerned about the comparative lack of ventilation. Am I crazy?

Glurf: I have a triple one you can have! It doesn't have the cute open weave though. Also, it's slightly darker than the photos below.

I found a pretty one for a very low price at a local hardware store. I only wish it had a lid so the dirty clothes would feel more put away, but I could probably make one if I was really motivated...

simple human has another, I think better, one on their site. www.simplehuman.com

it's available in singles and doubles.

the one shown here is too expensive and looks like a trash can.

huge fan a simple human though.

I have one similar to #7, but it's a half moon shape and from Target. It looks very nice and suits my purposes just fine.

Veruca, that's a lot of money for a laundry hamper. I don't have any solutions to offer, alas. I tolerate my vinyl crush-can blue hamper (a smaller version of #4) but I don't love it, and don't want to spend a fortune on a new one.

Thereso,

I love that hamper! I might just order one too...

That website made my eyes bleed though ... I'm just sayin'...

Hampers make clothes stink....has anyone noticed this??

I never use one.....dirty laundry goes into laundry baskets on my closet floor. I guess because the clothes aren't crammed tight there's more air circulation or something.
