Roundup: Bedroom Art Over Head

01_14_ArtOver1.jpg

Bedroom art is so interesting — specifically the art that people hang directly over their heads. Maybe it's just us but the selection of what to hang over one's head while sleeping offers a much more intimate glimpse into one's personality than any other art in any other room. Over our own bed is an old, cut paper collage made by a family member in a lovely ornate frame. To us, this personal piece simply could not reside anywhere else. We've rounded up a variety of over-bed art selections from across AT Boston — follow the jump to check them out...

any idea about the paint on the wall in the first picture? It looks EXACTLY like the shade I used for my guest room. Mine was a Martha Stewart color called "Birdhouse". Just curious.

I was wondering the same thing. The color is absolutely glorious!

I have almost the exact color on the wall behind our bed, from Sherwin Williams but I can't think of the name. If someone really wants to know I can look it up. It really is a great color, not what I thought but turned out much better than expected!
I also have not the whole sheet set, but the pillowcases on the bed too, love them!

I have a ledge shelf above my bed, on which I have a few photos of family and friends in frames, a couple of oriental fans and a calligraphy drawing created by a monk in a temple in Kyoto.

I fell completely in love with the photography of Alicia Bock (http://www.aliciabock.etsy.com), but I couldn't afford three full sized prints, so I bought three notecards and framed them in oversized frames with mats I cut myself. I love how it turned out!

Here's a picture.

I continued the floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall navy velvet draperies from the window wall alongside my bed to the wall behind my bed so that it appears as if I have windows on two sides of my bedroom - As a bonus, it helps insulate and keep the noise from my neighbors down and the vertical folds in the fabric act like stripes to make the ceiling appear even taller.

I also need to know that paint color. We just moved, and the bedroom is too neutral. I wanted to paint it dark, but it's pretty dark anyway (north facing window onto a sheltered balcony) - It's a big room, but needs something to draw it in without being too dark. PLEASE share the color if anyone knows it! :)

My art above my bed is a 4'x5' white canvas that I gessoed and then didn't do anything with it. It's kind of cool, but people usually think it's a projection screen at first....

Is the color in the first pic Benjamin Moore Aura Blue Echo?

Also, is anyone concerned about hanging art above your head in earthquake country? I like the look, but am afraid of getting bonked on the head.

I have Bill Brauer's Scarlet Dancer in a simple black frame hanging over my bed. I'm not sure what this says about me, but I chose this one out of the three i have (Gold Dress and Carmine Cafe are on other walls) to go above the bed because it was my favorite. I love how passionate the girl dancing is.

I have a David Weeks two-arm lamp that I got at his sample sale a few weeks ago. I love the lamp but can't decide if I like the way it looks where it is. I hung a small abstract painting right (a gift from a friend) under it but now think I should have a headboard both to hide the power cord and to give it a more finished look.

I absolutely love the idea of leaning an empty frame over an original illustration or painting, as shown in "House Tour: Caitlin's Beacon Hill Jewel Box." What an original way to display artwork!

I have hand carved plasterboard letters that spell out, "you and me," which I purchased from www.kuber.etsy.com. I love walking into my room and seeing that sentiment there above the bed I share with my husband. It just reminds me what my life is all about, and what I;m most grateful for.

What are you all newlyweds? Wedding photos and "you and me" painted on the walls? I might put "you again?" over my bed.

As for design, I like a tall headboard and no art over the bed. You can't see it when in you are in bed.

I hung a tapestry that is maroon with dark print. The print is a picture of a fairy scene....plants, flowers, rocks, and various fairies---some flying, some kissing, some playing musical instruments.

I bought it because it makes me think of what dreams should be like---peaceful, musical, calm. It's odd because I'm not generally a fantasy or fairy-type person. This just appealed to me. I coordinated my comforter so that it is greens, blues and the exact shade of maroon that's in the print. I love it. And I live in earthquake country so I don't have to worry about a picture coming down on my head!

Hi all, Kayla here

Yes, that is indeed Ben Moore Blue Echo (Aura) - good eye, mad. We actually painted our bedroom twice because (first) we couldn't sleep in beige but then chose a fence-sitting green that wasn't dark OR light enough. It took some convincing to go this dark but Wes came around and now we both LOVE the color. So much so I wish the ceiling was painted too, but we rent so that's out...

The duvet is Dwell for Anthropologie, no longer sold (to my knowledge). But the Dwell original is still available on their website.

If you live in an earthquake zone ... heavy/glass items above one's bed are a BAD idea! I've a soft padded headboard, just in case "THE BIG ONE" ever hits.

In my old apartment, I used to have a row of vintage hankies hanging over my bed: http://www.flickr.com/photos/littleblackmaryjanes/819561834/

I haven't recreated this in my new (tinier) apartment though - all those patterns seem overpowering in a much smaller space.

Why hankies? Because as a native Californian who has been through several big earthquakes, I don't want anything hanging over my bed that could hurt if it falls when things start shaking while I'm asleep!

I no longer live in an earthquake zone but still fear objects falling on my head in bed.

So I put pieces of art on the opposite wall to the headboard. I have a four poster bed and when I wake up, I look between the posts and am greeted by beautiful art. Right now I have a lovely vintage landscape painting that has been 'doctored' by a close friend. Its kind of Bob Ross meets steampunk.

I have a loft bed, so there isn't actually much space above my bed - once the pillows are propped up, it just isn't neccesary. Still - I use eight full-colour photos (about A4 in size) of the planets, thanks to my Planetary Society membership. They're gorgeous, and since they're just blu-tacked and very light, they'd be safe for pretty much anywhere. (No earthquakes here, but I want to move to SF one day!)

I have four framed Paris monuments over my bed. My sister and I made them using graphic black and white wrapping paper from Ikea for the background. Then on top we glued white or black cutouts of Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, l'Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower. We got the frames on the cheap from Michael's.

On the wall next to my bed, I painted a large, stylized octopus. To go with it, I have a print of Ken Wong's "Stay and I Will Love Thee" on the other wall above my head: http://www.thumbtackpress.com/browse/product_info.php?products_id=579

i have a ginormous syroco mirror over my bed (this picture was taken maybe three weeks after i moved in, and my bedroom configuration is undergoing massive upheaval - but the mirror will be migrating to my bed's new spot as well!)

i love it; i thought i would be scared to have something that big and heavy over my bed but it's great! very stable. and i keep meaning to write something inspiring about dreams on it (sov gott, perhaps?), but then i get sad about the idea of messing it up with my not so lovely cursive handwriting...

I must say, I loved reading this thread. I was raised in a home where you never hung things over the bed or crib in case it fell (especially on the baby!), but I must admit, as an adult, with her own home, I'm over it now, and LOVE a big, sexy art piece over a bed. I just bought a photographic print at a studio visit and it's at the framer's now for further use over a head board :)

Someone (female) had a house tour here that had this gorgeous pinkish and white floral fabric hanging over the bed and I remember sprinkles of reds, pinkish reds, raspberry, melon colors throughout the house. I wish I could find it I have it stuck in my head that fabric was so pretty something we can do in earthquake land. Does thing ring a bell anybody??
