According to its description, the owner of this vintage steelcase desk bought it used in 1966. With a little love it could most certainly be brought back to its former glory and hopefully last at least another 50 years.

I actually just picked up one of these for $20, and am wondering how you'd go about refinishing the top?
its not in the worst shape, but I already sanded down the rest of it and resprayed it (I know, but I can't really afford to have it powdercoated or anything like that), so I might as well take care of the top too, while I have the whole thing apart.

Oren, if your desk is similar to my Steelcase desk, the top is formica. It's pretty much impossible for a DIY-er to refinish formica. There are professionals that do it, but even they typically just put a new layer of formica down instead of refinishing the old layer.
You can sand, fill in holes, and paint formica, but it won't have the same finish as the original product. My suggestion? Keep an eye out for another Steelcase desk with a top that is in good condition. The tops of these desks are removable and are almost always the same size and are attached the same way.

i love these desks; they last forever! i've been wanting one for a long time, something that the kids can't destroy. there's no way i'd ever pay for one of those sauder pressed wood desks because it'd just be toothpicks in a month. the steelcase is the way to go, but i just don't have the room required for one. they are about 3' deep, which would be almost half the width of the room. $179 seems steep considering here in detroit they go for $30-40 on craigslist. xo

Hey Oren, my flickr friend did a damn good job fixing her tanker desk up, here's the before,

then the next one in the set is after.
And good on you for taking it apart to fix it up, they are worth the effort. Good luck!
