If you trash-pick as much as we do, you probably see a lot of parts to things, especially chairs. Instead of passing them by next time, you may appreciate this bit of inspiration from British designer Martino Gamper. He created a project called 100 Chairs in 100 Days and its 100 Ways in which he made new chairs from parts of discarded and donated chairs-- using the bottom half of a plastic garden chair you'll recognize from your neighbors porch to using bits of some famous modern classics...

One of the things we love about Gamper's project is viewing the design process-- well, in process. You can see how the design of each chair works, like a sketchbook in 3D. We don't look at these chairs expecting them to be perfect, even comfortable. But they allow us to gain insight into how any chair is thought out as its being created.
Gamper sells a book on his website with a photo of each chair (we blogged about it in January). Seeing his chairs reminds us that the design process is something that we all can do. You don't have to be a big company or even have a lot of money. You just have to see the possibilities.

It's a bit dumb and it's a bit clever. More art than furniture. I wouldn't want to sit on it naked or with clothes for that matter.

Thanks to our basic anatomy of a butt and bendable knees, you can create a Frankenchair out of an infinite number of things. Still, these are very entertaining and some are quite artistic!

I wouldn't have led off with the crate chair... I do enjoy that term Frankenchair you had, lightspeed. I think these are goofy, and smart, I cannot say they're awful. They're not really chairs, and they're not not chairs. It's a freakish balance to make such amazing impractical things.

These are most ridiculously awful things Ive ever seen. Let me go chop up my plastic lawn chair and the grocery cart down the block...someone will always call it 'art'.

These kind of make me smile. Kind of goofy, with a touch of abandoned object...the trash picker/urban decay lover in me has a thing for these. Not sure how I'd use them though.

love this idea but am very suspicious of the "donated" in the description.....some of these "parts" if whole chairs are not cheap. if he cannibalized functional chairs i'd like an admission (it changes the exercise).
