Boston

DIY, modular storage isn't a new concept—its a great answer to storage problems in spaces where a traditional piece of furniture just won't work. Move over Ikea, Target is getting into the modular game with its new Itso System which is affordable, versatile and comes with its own online builder which lets you completely design your system from the comfort of your computer...

This great online builder will let you completely customize your Itso system (even change the wall and floor color of the room so it looks more like your space) and fit it out with all the accessories Target offers.

All modules come with feet or casters in two main color systems—white plastic and wood laminate—with 7 accessory colors. Our favorite element is that Itso Builder gives you complete dimensions as you build and rearrange each module.

... and like all Target furniture is guarenteed to be over priced for it's terrible quality.

I seem to remember reading some really bad reviews for the Itso products on the Target website. Also seemed kinda pricey, for what it is.

I just bought some of these (the plastic ones, with the fabric bins) for my daughter's dorm room. They needed to be light enough to be portable. I liked the fact that the bins don't run along a track or anything--they just rest on the shelves and bottoms of the cubes, so there's less to go wrong with the way they function. Each plastic cube is all one piece, so they might not fall apart before September is over.

after looking at them in person i will say that while i wouldn't want them out in the open, they seem to be of really decent quality if you're looking for some storage in a closet or laundry room.... which is just what i'll be picking some up for!

We bought some of these about a month ago and I love it. We arranged 2 shelf units and 2 cabinet units to make a crendenza of sorts and it worked out really well. They don't look cheap as some other Target items can.

The wooden ones seem ok for what they are. Not really sure how well they attach to one another in order to form bigger pieces, but if you wanted to just have a small side table / cabinet or something they would do fine.

They are a bit over priced though. Most of the configurations shown would cost at least 250 dollars or more.

The Itso system is just okay. We bought it for my son's room, since we live close to Target and the Itso system is much cheaper than Ikea's. But the cubes don't hold together very well (they attach together with little plastic snaps that can be a little tricky). I purchased a plastic shelf to divide the cube in half (top and bottom), but the shelf began to dip in the middle from holding two little storage bins less than a day. The fabric bins are a really nice size; I'm able to fill them up with Legos, train tracks, etc. but the cardboard is already getting a little warped. It's as if they built the thing to house only lightweight items, like clothing. Or paper towels. But for our purposes, I'm okay with it. It was cheap and organizes all my kid's toys. I'm just dubious as to how long it will hold up.

Sorry, this whole post reads like a commercial for Target...

I like cubby systems -- they're great! and there are all kinds out there. I think this would have been a less commercial and more useful post if there were several pointers to different systems at various price/quality points.

The system was designed for them by IDEO, so it's not surprising that the idea behind it is strong and it looks good on the website. I checked it out at the Atlantic Center Target this weekend and it was about as flimsy as I expected. All I could think was 'some designer who worked so hard on this is really really sad about how they cheaped out on building it.'

(disclaimer: I work for an IDEO competitor.)

FYI: The Itso storage boxes fit the Ikea Expedit bookcase as well. Perfect fit.

Thanks ee2485 - that is exactly what I was wondering! There aren't enough options at IKEA for the basket/bin style storage for the expedit. It seems a little odd considering how many of those expedit units they sell. There are a few more options this year, but nothing I like still.
