apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Small Cool 2009: aphleung's Quebecois Home
International Division #14

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: aphleung
Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Size: 420 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The high ceiling with tall windows helps make the small apartment feel much bigger. The bedroom size is relatively large comparing to the apartment size. Even with a queen size bed there’s still plenty of space around it. Plus the South-East facing windows gives a good dose of sunlight every morning.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The living room is fairly large until I need to also have my desk in it. The odd size alcoves make finding furniture even more challenging. I was able to hack my desk to serve dual purpose. When I have guest over, I’m able to raise the table height to make it into a bar table.

The first photo is so bizarre-looking but it explains the table feature really well! This is a great-looking guy pad, very sleek and sophisticated, even with all your gear.

I can't believe you managed to fit three television sets and a ghost into this space!

One xbox for each tv I see, how do you deal with surround sound when playing FPS's? I couldn't stand my hubby in the same room beside me playing a different game that's why he's upstairs and I'm downstairs Kudos on you for that! Your set up is good.

Me thinks you should visit Unplggd for wire control solutions. There's a forest on your floor, man!

Um...I think it looks like the home of someone who has a lot of friends. Why else would he need so many xbox's?

I really like this place, it looks really fun to hang out in and the kitchen looks functional and bright too.

@gordon. Unnecessarily harsh, man. I think this place is well-kept, nicely organized, and looks miles better than the homes of a lot of younger guys I know.

That said, I do wish the naked girls poster would be replaced with something a little classier, and that the fancy electronic gizmos were perhaps hidden in a cabinet.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

The three Xboxes are for the game you see on the screens. It’s a feature supported by the game. When playing multiplayer or different games, each screen has its own headphone output. Not surround sound for each player but have to make a compromise somewhere. When they are not being use, the cabinet front rolls down and cover everything up. All the wires are managed inside the cabinet so there’s only one loom wrapped cord outside and the entire unit can be roll around anywhere in the room.

I really wish I could post more photos. To make the apartment feel bigger, I’ve made each room a different theme. The living room is a bachelor pad, strictly going for the wow factor. The model car on the wall is actually a Lego set. The bedroom uses warmer colors with absolutely nothing gadgets/electronics inside to make a more European country home feel. And for the kitchen, because it is so small, functionality is a priority.

I know several gamer guys who should take inspiration from you. You have your setup so organized. Not my taste, but if more gamer guys took after you in that regard, they'd have more girls over!

where is the bar/table in your kitchen from? that would work so well in my new place!

Michelle, that table is made out of IKEA parts, EKBY MOSSBY shelf with UTBY legs. The legs you have to ask for them from the kitchen department.

Just to clarify: I wasn't offended by the naked girls poster. It's just not classy; it makes the room look like a dorm rather than a grown person's apartment. That is all.

Very nice place for a 420 square feet apartment. Doesn't feel small at all.

I live in Montreal too and I'm wondering which neighborhood has such high windows. Not le plateau that's for sure. I'm looking for a new place there and I have visited about 10 places with nowhere near as big windows as those.

I really like your game set up too.
