apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Small Cool 2009: Johan's Swedish Space
International Division #26

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Johan
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Size: 345 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? If I could choose just one thing I'll say the light. It has fairly big windows and has sun from morning to about 12:00. If it's sunny it's very bright even in the afternoon and evening then the light reflects from many buildings and windows in the city. Some other things I like about it is the balcony, view and floorplan.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? It's small so it's hard to fit all the functions that I want to have. I've changed things many times but the way it is now I'm fairly satisfied with. The latest thing I did was to get another table so I now have a dinner table and a computer table. Really nice to have a dinner table that's always empty. Another thing I like a lot is the removal of the wall between the kitchen and room a couple of years ago, it made the apartment look bigger I think, but it was a lot of work. The kitchen is another thing where I have changed many things. It's a blend of the original from 1934 and some new things I've added and I think it works pretty good now. Lots of storage and counter space. Many things in my apartment are from IKEA and that's where I got some inspiration from also I guess.

Love your kitchen counter top. Great place. You have my vote.

Hm. This looks organized, but it's visually cluttered. I know AT is all about open shelving and storage for small spaces, but it doesn't work unless you pare down your stuff; otherwise you just have a bunch of stuff on display.

I think regular cabinets in the kitchen and tucking away the utensils instead of hanging them all would calm the back kitchen wall down. Hiding the wires from the computer on the desk is another thing to do. Organizing the stuff on that big shelf near the window into baskets and boxes would also cut down on the visual busyness.

There also doesn't seem to be anything tying the room together at all. It just looks random. A consistent color palette would help. I also think that replacing the bed plus sofa and getting a sleeper sofa would make things feel less crowded in the living area.

You do have a nice space to work with, though. The view from the giant windows is amazing, but the room competes with it. 'Lightening' the room by tucking the clutter out of sight will help immensely.

it's funny that you say the thing you like the most is the light, and yet all your pictures are not only at night, they are super dark and we can't see anything.
i. . . think i like it. . .?

Not for me - Edit! Please! There's just too much going on here, it looks something like a dorm room with too much stuff in it.

Joan52: Thanks :)

Slowdown: Thanks for a lot of interesting ideas. The kitchen I'm fairly happy with, but almost all the other open storage places are a real mess. Its just things piled up on each other :( I agree that the bed sofa is a bit much in this small apartment. I think I want a real bed, not the fold out one, but maybe it could work with the bed I have and use it as sofa with a lot of cushions, during the day.

Another thing I thought about was that the apartment looks bigger in the pictures than in reality. It's almost in the teeny-tiny category if it would have been in the US.

jac7890: Yes I thought about that too but was in a bit of a hurry to send it in. Just discovered Apartmenttherapy the day I sent it in actually. Like it a lot :) If I would send it in again I would change almost all the things, both the pictures and the text.

About many things that are from IKEA. The IKEA bus from the 'Kungens kurva' store here in Stockholm stops almost outside my house, so that's a good thing :)

The sentence above: I agree that the bed sofa is a bit much in this small apartment.

Should of course be: I agree that the bed plus sofa is a bit much in this small apartment.

Doesn't make much sense otherwise.

I love your concept. I'd have a "get it out of here" box and the cords are killin' me. Nevertheless...BRAVO.

I like it! Redgirl's right, it does feel homey - looks like a real flat and not one that's been organized within an inch of it's life.

Normally I hate kitchen utensils on display, but yours might make me change my mind...

By the way, what is "Kungens kurva"? What does it mean? It made me laugh out loud because in Hungarian, and several other Eastern European languages, kurva is a not-so-gentle word for prostitute... :)

Next year take pictures with all the beautiful light.

I once wrote a paper and sent it via email to all my classmates but no one got it. When I learned this fact I told everyone it was a GREAT! paper.

I have no idea how great your place is because I can't see it.

Thanks Emika :)

'Kungens kurva' is a big shopping place here south of Stockholm. It's also the name of the IKEA store there.

In 1946 the Swedish king Gustav V drove of the road and into a ditch there in a curve of the road. That's why its called Kungens kurva, that mean 'the kings bend' or 'the kings curve'.

Its a little bit funny that kurva means that in Hungarian, because...I don't know if I should say this but I guess I'll do it anyway....the rumour was that the king was doing 'something' to the chauffeur(driver) so he lost his concentration and drove of the road. By 'something' I mean that it was rumored that the king was gay, not officially of course, and it think it was even illegal to be gay in 1946 in Sweden.

Anyway you can see a picture of it in Wikipedia by searching for 'Kungens kurva Wikipedia'. There's a Wikipedia version of it in both English and Swedish.

FilthyMcNasty: I'll do that if I remember and if I'm allowed. Are you allowed to post the same apartment next year? Well at least I can't do much worse :) since I seem to have almost the least number of thumbs up here.

I got on too late to vote....but I would have given you a thumbs up. I like it because it looks like a place where a real guy lives. In a small space, you can't hide everything away that you need to live each day with. I even like the hanging of the kitchen utensils. Makes it look like a snazzy place to cook.

Actually, I like that all the utensils hanging. It gets them up off the counter top, which is nice and clean. It looks like a good place to work.
