Small Cool 2009: lessismaur's Permanent Hotel
Little Division #21

thumbs up

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? My biggest challenges have been organizing all our the stuff (tools and crafts, instruments, dining room type stuff, etc), so it doesn't look like we shamelessly have this much junk. My constant goal is to make everything look clean and uncluttered — like a permanent hotel.

I love the contrast between your dark walls and light furniture. What color paint did you use? What is hanging above your stove?

This apartment is the bomb diggity who would think you could take a 780 square foot apartment and make it look palatial!!

Very well organized and cozy.

It looks very clean, but I wouldn't say uncluttered. . .
Some of the photos show that a bit of editing would help, such as paring down furniture and accessories.

One example is the cabinet in the hallway -- allowing only 2' of passage space!

Aside from that, fabulous paint choices and great apartment.

Gorgeous. That dark wall colour is so luxurious but doesn't make the room any darker. Great light!

Thanks for the feedback jac7890- I probably should have said B&B :) As for the hallway cabinet- that's definitely noted as one of my biggest challenges- where to put party platters / serve-ware without an actual dining room, haha!

"where to put party platters / serve-ware..."

How about a plate rack like this one? Doesn't help if you don't want to look at your platters or you have other items in the hall cabinet that wouldn't fit here or elsewhere, though.

I am in LOVE with everything about this apartment. Above all else, it feels liveable and enjoyable.

I think manndog hit it right on the nail: palatial.

It reminds me of the perfect Cape Cod seaside cottage. I could really live here and be happy waking up every morning. You really did an excellent job on the decorating and placement of furniture. I love the linens, the curtains and everything else.

I love you sofa and wood coffee table. Nice colors through out and love the kitchen, nice layout and good colors. Not crazy about the wine bottles lined up on top of the cabinets but to each is own.

Hi Azaleasmoke- sorry I don't remember what brand of paint we used- and those paint colors are just hexadecimal numbers used for web (unfortunately I can't post a link to what I'm referring to)- but I definitely recommend researching water-based eco-friendly brands if you can- with little or no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). The site Eartheasy is a great resource.

Well, nature made the table, my father-in-law thought I would like it instead of burning it as firewood, and I just added the legs :)

I'm really sorry yours didn't win your face-off. You did a wonderful job and I think it is MUCH better than the other, which was oh-so-trendy and kitch instead of calm and liveable like yours.
