Survey: Relationship between Childhood Canopy Bed And Grown-up Canopy?

Picture 2redcan.png

We have a special place in our hearts for canopy beds which we attribute to growing up with one. For example, when we spotted this red canopy bed, designed by Charles Ramberg, in the April 2009 issue of House Beautiful, we coveted it instantly. Do you correlate your like or dislike of canopy beds to a childhood relationship with one?...

Granted, this particular bed might also capture our hearts due to the surprising red color and the nubby fabric canopy and headboard curtain. Particular style aside, we still periodically daydream about designing our own modern canopy bed. There's something about being surrounded by a canopy that appeals to our cravings for coziness.

How about you? We'd love your thoughts and memories about all-things-canopy.

I never had one, but I'd love to if my bedroom were large enough...

First, I think the canopy in that picture is a horrible color and the style isn't great either. Honestly, I think that's an ugly bed.

I loved having a canopy as a child...you could throw stuff on top of it when it came to cleaning your room and you could use sheets and blankets to close it up and create this cool private space...... besst childhood bed ever!

I used to visit my fancy cousin and she had the perfect room- lined with shelves of stuffed animals and collector dolls and pictures and a fluffy white carpet, and the centerpiece of her fancy room was a tall lush luxurious white canopy bed, with eyelet dust ruffle and 101 pillows. It was like the angels would sing when you walked through the double doors into her room.
By contrast, my gray metal hi-riser was the exact width of my room, end to end, so there would have been no room for a headboard, let alone anything of that magnitude.
In college my bedroom was a loft with 4" ceilings, so my bed was a boxspring and mattress on the floor. After that I lived in a series of crappy apartments while I put every penny I earned into my handbag business.
When I finally moved in with my husband into a nice apartment at 30 years old, the first thing I bought was a clean, modern looking canopy bed. It's not white or frilly, but it is extra tall with the box spring and mattress so I have to jump up a bit to get on... like a kid would. Yeah- definite associations....

@teeze - what brand / do you have any pictures? I'm on the hunt for a modern canopy bed that happens to be extra toll.

My sister had a flowery purple canopy bed growing up and I was never once jealous, although now that I see the modern versions (I love Room & Board's Architecture bed), I realize that she was on to something...

I always wanted to and now that I've bought my first bed, it's of course, a canopy.

I always wanted a canopy bed, so perhaps that is why I like them.

You should have had "no and don't care" as options for each question. I've never had one and never thought about them much. I'm not opposed to them at all. I just don't get them at all. It seems like another way to catch dust.

My grandparents had one in their home - a common traditional Indian one. It had two "beams" across the bed on the canopy, maybe to hold the mosquito net better. But for us cousins, we'd drape bedsheets over it and convert that bed to three "home" and play sooooooo many games. I have some great memories associated with that canopy bed.
But to own one as an adult? Never. I don't need to protect myself from mosquitoes, nor do I need a bed that can convert itself to 3 apartments, so there's no purpose to the posts and the beams and the canopy fabric just hanging down for no apparent reason.
