We're on a coffee table hunt and, while we have our decisions narrowed down to a square table, exactly what it looks like or where it comes from is still undecided. We've opened our search up to include Lekker Home and BoConcept. We used to live down the street from Bo over in Cambridge and visited the store several times — always leaving with a mediocre feeling about everything except the free bottled water at the door. But we recently saw on their website that they build custom coffee tables (and many other pieces of furniture) from a kit of parts that looks more than decent and very affordable. We wonder, after all the bad press on their customer service in years past, is the quality of the furniture worth going BoCustom...

Wow, so many options. I'm amazed with how many ways you can say "Boring"

shopping for dressers, i was amazed how much bo was charging for thin particle board drawer bottoms. the dressers weren't much more substantial than ikea models but were significantly more expensive. i've been much more impressed with room and board's construction.

Without knowing what the pricepoints for these are - it's kinda hard to say if it's "worthwhile" considering these...
...but IMO, for this type of style, I'd be inclined to step up to something more substantial such as the Portica or Parsons table bases & solid wood tops from Room and Board - the steel bases are practically indestructable and if the wood tops do scratch, you could either flip the top over or sand the wood down and re-lacquer.

I agree with bepsf. I would go with room and board (stocked or custom). Far better quality.

I also agree that Bo is overpriced ikea. Bad customer service (at least here in Cambridge, MA) and bad quality. Recommend that people shop elsewhere!

I can’t speak to Bo’s quality or customer service having never dealt with them, but I purchased two custom Parsons table (coffee table and end table) from Room & Board that arrived literally 2 hours ago and the entire purchasing process was great - as is the furniture quality. I would recommend giving R&B a look too.

I bought a small sofa/sleeper from BoConcept several years ago -- similar to this one, but with different styling. (And it cost about $300 less!)
I don't recall having any trouble with the purchase process, and the sofa's still in good shape -- despite being used as a bed for a long while when a friend was living in our guest room.
I was surprised by how poorly made the casegoods in the showroom seemed, though.

I have found the customer service at Boconcept exceptionally good in the past, but the quality and design has really gone downhill in the past 3-4 years, and it was not that great to begin with. So I would rather spend my money elsewhere.

Hello all,
You'll never believe this, but from 2004 to 2008, I used to work for the Cambridge, Ma. BoConcept.
Please know that as I write this, I stand completely on my own and with no alliance to BoConcept, I'm just going to state some quick points. Cool?
1) The Occa table top collection is one of several collections offered by BoConcept for well over 10 years, if not more.
In fact BoConcept everywhere else in the world, is known and RESPECTED for their modular furniture and current design trends. BoConcept has also won coveted design awards and accolades for their flexibility and function for their products.
2) For the price, I must say, you get a great product.
Nine times out of ten, if you come across a wobbly dresser or table, chances are it's due to the assembler and not the product itself, even if it's an item on the showroom floor. Usually a little TLC is all it takes to
remedy the issue.
(Trust me, after 4 years of working w/ clients who elected not to pay the 3% assembly fee, and then calling the store, accusing their product was defected, we quickly corrected their impression once one of us, visited the client at their home, usually on our own time, and assembled the item to the company & customer's standards.)
3) Many are unawre of this as well, but BoConcept sets a high standard when it comes to GREEN furniture manufacturing.
BoConcept farms their own trees with a rapid growing species that requires very little rain water.
Each piece of wood that was not used in the manufacturing process is recycled and used for another purpose.
BoConcept uses natural glues / sealants and not formaldehyde.
The veneers are made of real wood and
their sealant makes the surfaces resistant to heat and water. Most of their wall systems, tables, and dressers are made from MDF, and not particle board.
Also, each drawer in ANY BoConcept item, is reinforced with brackets underneath the drawer that support up to
25 lbs, as well as have "slow motion" rails that ease your drawers in on their own when you're done.
Finally, as for BoConcept's customer service.
What can I say, it's an area that is left open for improvement.
Go ahead and buy the Occa coffee table!!!
I've had my Occa 281 coffee table for 4 years now and it has head up great and w/ little scratches.
What qualifies a furniture item to be considered "GREEN", to an uninformed consumer, can also be considered made of poor quality. Again, at no fault to the product.

after all that you said you'd expect us to believe you that you have no alliance for BoConcept... are you a store manager :P
For me it's just overpriced...i'd rather shop at DWR for the price

To cscamp20,
A DWR coffee table would be twice the price and made of the same materials as a BoConcept coffee table.
And as I stated in m very 1st sentence, I worked for
BoConcept from 2004 to 2008. It's now April 2009.
